Twilight zone night

As I've mentioned in a prior thread, my wife and I recently got a pet skunk (named, after much deliberation, Pisces).

Well, Pisces hasn't been the healthiest of skunks. She's had various problems since we got her, the most serious of which is a prolapsed rectum that has happened twice now (I won't go into detail, but suffice it to say it's not a pretty sight and must be painful as hell for the poor little girl).

Tonight (a couple hours ago) is when occurrence number two of the aformentioned problem unfortunately occurred, and after calling around we found out that the only emergency vet clinic open this late with a veterinarian able to operate on a skunk is 2.5 hours away in Tampa. So Heather calls her sister who graciously agrees to drive her and the skunk, and a little while later they're on their way.

That is when the craziness begins.

A few minutes after they leave, Heather calls me from her cell in hysterics screaming about some guy driving the wrong way almost getting into a head-on collision with them (missed by mere feet from the sounds of it, running them off the road). Thankfully a tragedy was averted and everyone was OK...

Then while I'm on the phone with them I hear screeching tires and more hysterics. Apparently they barely avoided hitting a dog lying in the middle of the same road now (high-traffic six lane highway). That's all the info I managed to ascertain from the noise on the phone before I was disconnected.

I waited about 10 minutes, tried calling her back a few times with no answer.

Eventually Heather calls back and says they're on their way back home with two puppies that had been abandoned in the middle of the highway -- which they drop off into my care minutes later, and then leave for Tampa again with the skunk.

Shortly thereafter, I get another call from the road informing me that they have just been pulled over by a police officer who simply drove up beside their car, shined a flashlight on them, then kept on going.

Anyways, just thought I'd sit down and type this up to help calm my nerves a little since I'm going kind of wacko here. Two strange dogs on my lanai, my own dog going nuts knowing that they're out there, and my wife and sick baby skunk on the way to surgery in Tampa (behold the moths flying from my wallet).

If it's not too much trouble, any well-wishes and positive energy you could muster up towards a poor little hurting skunky tonight would be greatly appreciated.

I guess a skunk with a prolapsed rectum can indeed change ones life. A skunk? A skunk? Why would anyone want a skunk as a pet? I'm not being judgemental, I just wonder why anyone would even consider having a skunk for a pet. Did you find it wounded in the woods and bring it back to good health? Did you just decide that, hey, I want a skunk? Anyway, I feel your pain. I think.

Thanks, Socspy. I guess I should have paid better attention. So, now I know. You're wife made you do it. I still would like to know why anyone would want one. Truthfully. What is the force behind it? Does your wife have a reason, other than, I want a skunk? Does it stay indoors? Does it sit on your lap while you watch TV? Does it beg while you eat supper?

She wanted another pet... I would have liked a cat, but she's allergic. Skunk was the next obvious alternative. Or something like that. Honestly it all came as kind of a shock to me. Just all of a sudden one day she was saying how badly she wants a skunk... and a week later we had one.

Yes, it's an indoor pet (but she heals pretty good when we take her out with us around the house). Yes, it sits in your lap (actually usually she'll dig her way under your shirt) while you watch TV. And yes she's a worse beggar at the table than my dog (skunks will eat constantly until they die of obesity if you let them).

I must say that in my area, a skunk would be a VERY odd pet, however, i can see how someone would like them, and to each his own. I hope Pisces does well...

i've had a few oddball pets over the years (african pygmy hedgehog, lizard, tank full of crawdads, red eared slider turtles etc etc etc) & i've always thought it would be spiffy to have a skunk. i hope Miss Pisces feels better... and that your family's luck turns
sending lots of OklahomaKarma your way

She's doing ok now. Still feisty as ever despite what have to be very uncomfortable stitches in place. My wallet is suddenly much lighter though for some reason

I can't say the same for my poor lanai though. We were keeping the strays out there this morning while we went to the office for a meeting... and when we got back they had ripped open the screening and escaped. Heather hopped in the car and managed to find them again somewhere in the neighborhood. Now they're trashing my bathroom (which, on a rather unfortunately timed whim, I had decided to clean top to bottom this past weekend).
