Dennis the Menace

Only on for a minute, but so far, so good in Miami.

Only 36,000 homes without power in the greater Dade/Broward metro areas as of 11pm EST. Huge numbers of old-growth trees down already in wonderful old Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, but the winds and rain have slowed in just the past hour and we have a reprieve now until morning when it passes directly across from us on the Gulf Coast other side of the Everglades. No news yet from Naples, Marco Island, Ft Myers, but I don't think they've gotten this side of Dennis the Menace yet.

I'm glad I stayed home tonight and skipped the traditional Hurricane Party. My best friend's neighborhood is in total darkness, 236 homes, and the best estimate for power resumption is now 36 hours, if no higher priorities occur.

But I can still commiserate with them, cellular service is spotty but working, and I've recreated the ambiance here by listening to Parrothead music (Jimmy Buffet) all night and drinking spiced Capt Morgan & cokes.

Ah, tradition, and soon to sleep after just a few more of these and the next forecast from the NHS, to dream of waking up and everyone around us is safe and sound.

Good night all,

P.S. Godspeed to our friends and colleagues in the UK. You've shown the world the indomitable British spirit, again.

HRH was truly majestic today, wasn't she?

Good luck. I hope everything goes alright. Here is a question I hear many people ask everytime a new hurricane comes through town. "Why don't more people move, knowing that another one could destroy their home at any time?" You must live in fear of the next one coming. Of course, this is from people who have never lived in these areas.

This is the good thing about living in Atlanta. We get all of these hurricanes, but by the time we get them, they're just thunderstorms and tons of wind! I love it!

We may lose a few trees, but that's about it.

Tornados on the other hand.......... ugh... been through more of those things than someone NOT in the midwest should go through.

I could ask the same about people who live in earthquake prone places. At least you have a pretty good idea of where a hurricane may go at least 24 hours in advance, earthquakes are still basically unpredictable. And hurricanes only occur during like a 5 month hurricane season while earthquakes can happen anytime of the year.

Exactly. I'd rather have a few days notice and time to prepare, though when its a direct hit like Andrew was, there isn't much you can do but run.

Looks like we lucked out this time, it slowed down and moved west overnight, though the winds and thunder did wake me up a few times, not as bad as we expected.

Still checking the news reports for damage in the area before venturing out. Lots of trees and powerlines down.

Just goes with the territory. No snow or ice in winter.
People in California have earthquakes, wildfires and mud slides; MidWest has tornados; Washington State had Mt. St Helens.

No matter where you are, there is always something weather wise.

At least I feel fortunate that the Tampa Bay area dodged the bullet last year and with Dennis. In all my 50+ years in Florida, these have been the worst hurricane seasons so far. It's only July.

At least I got shutters last year and live in a non-flood zone.
