Never served, but my one grandfather was in WWII and survived the Beach at Normandy. My other grandfather was in Korea and Vietnam, and the Good Lord Blessed me with both of them surviving so I could see them today.
I'm only 17, and I know, at least the people around here, in my generation, we don't respect our elders enough, and all the people who fought for this great country. Both veterans and the people still serving. I also know that I may not show it as much as I should to my grandfathers, but to everyone here who has served in any area, to defend our country, and to help us make it what it is today. I salute you all, and I thank you so very much. God Bless you, and I love you all, and I hope that you all take your own sweet time in living and enjoy the life you fought, or are fighting, for.
Nice way to put it, Daniel. Now, before it is too late, you need to make this same speech to both you grandfathers next time you see them. Tell them you understand and appreciate their sacrifices. Their eyes will light up.
it's like saying: "well those SAS operators are nothing to skoff at..." or: "Well, you know, that Delta trainning course is nothing to skoff at..."
Well, I guess our SOP teams are nothing to skoff at, I believe (and know, as I have had numerous joint moneuvers with the the US and other SOP units) we are one of the best in the world. With 2 and a half year all weather all terrain all mission training course and over 30 mission on average under one's belt I believe we are nothing to skoff at...
I guess I should have said, the Israeli military are a very highly trained and respected group. Or I will shut up before I dig myself deeper.
2 Things you don't mess with
You don't mess with Texas
Don't mess with the Tzahal(IDF)
You are quite right pdahound. Jukov is quite the guy if he served in the IDF. As to my understanding they are "well trained". Like he said, it's like scoffing at SAS. These guys know what there doing, after all they showed quite alot of strength in the Six Day War, taking the Gaza Strip, Sinai, Golen Heights and the West Bank. That and they are pretty dang likely to have nuclear weapons, not to mention that Mossad is quite the intelligence service, rivaling MI6 and the CIA. One thing I hold against Mossad ofcourse is that there agents, atleast used to frequantly use Canadian Passports to get around, but there just being smart I suppose, because everyones gotta love Canada.
Thats just my opinion though, and maybe some people learned a little but about the IDF. Thumbs up Jukov :approve:
More youngsters than vets I think but I'm loving these family stories. :)

Well, My Grandmother helped out on the war front by planting trees in Scotland and working in an ammunitions factory. I can't really think of anybody else at the moment without asking one of my parents. I might've had reletives fight in the Boer War, but I'm not sure.
My dad did a tour of duty in the army, then served 27 years in the georgia national guard as a E8(?) Staff Sergant with about 5 years full time, he also served at fort stewart during Desert Storm. My grandfather served in the Navy on a LST as a electrician master chief during the korean war.
Like many others my family has strong Military involvment, all of my uncles and most of my aunts served. I had an uncle in Vietnam at the same time as I was. He was a truck driver (very dangerous job) and I had a cousin working out of the same district area I was. I started out in Mortars, to Grunt, to RTO, to Squad leader to Door gunner on a Loch,
Left RVN to Colorado Springs (Ft. Carson) reuped there and spent 3.5 years assigned out of Schofield barracks Hawaii and was deployed all over the pacfic rim while there. Ended up at Ft. Jackson SC and took discharge there (After first child my outlook changed on the militarty life).Recieved several awards but th eonly one I really vlaue is My CIB.
My father served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific
My brother-in-Law served in the Army during Vietnam
My Father-in-Law served in the Congo as a Navy Corpsman attached to a Marine recon Unit during the Korea time frame.
I served in the Army during Desert Storm
I have hopes that one of my daughters will enlist, and perhaps my Sons but the boys are 1.5 and 5 now, so I'll have some time to see if they are 'right' for the military.

you know what makes me mad, i was applying at a community college and i saw that if you're a desert storm vet it's only like $7 per credit. but i gotta pay full price cuz they haven't done anything for OIF yet!! that's stupid
Finally, a benefit I could use. And don't sweat it, it takes a while for that stuff to roll around. It had been about 12 years since desert storm ended, and when I got out the VFW didn't think it counted.. "39 days? what kind of war was that, I spend more than that in the same foxhole in korea..."
