A $10 digital camera that's actually usable!

Yes, that's right. A $10, 1.1Mpixel digital camera from CVS. You'll need to modify it, but that's easy.
BTW, I went a step further and connected a diode and resistor to recharge the batteries from the USB port.

I want to turn it into a microscope camera for PCB work (as I already have a 4Mpixel camera for regular use), but I'll need to know how to put it into webcam mode first. Has anyone managed to put the red CVS camera (firmware revision 6550) into webcam mode? I want to be able to see a preview of the board area and then take a high resolution still for further analysis.

The $20 video camera is also interesting, but there is no guide yet. I sure hope that someone gets it figured out soon!

Oh, and LaurenNJ, here's your chance for an adventure. I have pointed out the path, and you can follow it. I've already done it to prove that it can be done. It'll be an interesting and educational experience. If nothing else, you'll have a cheap camera to play with or give to one of your friends. I can help you if necessary. It's your turn to show New Jersey that clever chicks can "uncripple" electronic devices. I will show Texas (and Aximsite), and you get to show New Jersey!

So far there isnt anything on the live viewer... Though the FlatFoto2 firmware (radioshack camera) seems to have much potential due to the similarities in the firmware. I think the flatfoto2 can actually use the 6550 firmware... if only it was the other way around. Im pretty sure its 1.3mp and if you end up with a type 30 imager you have a 2mp CCD though it only uses 1.3mp of it. (I think someone actually counted the pixles on the ccd)

I have 3 of them so far...

I recall someone had posted that you can use the camera to take pictures on a microscope

All microscopes are built to standard dimensions, either JIS (Japanese) or DIN (German). I’m relying on memory here, but a good reference is The Edmund Scientific catalog or their website: http://www.edmundoptics.com/
I bought a 4X Planar commercial-grade microscope objective from them and mounted the objective on a housing that I made from aluminum square tubing. (I had a friend who works in a machine shop machine threads in the end of my enclosure to match the objective.) I mounted the webcam’s circuit board (no lenses) at the required distance from the objective, and put a connector on the back for the USB cable. It’s a pain to focus, because I never got around to building a stand for it, but it works. I estimate that the resulting magnification is about 100X or so. I’ve got pictures, but no place to post them.

So if that makes any sence to you it is doable
