PC is running really slow now. ????

I've got a Win 98 SE machine that I use to keep my Ax synced and my calendar and things like this site. In the past 4 weeks it has really slowed down where my mouse behaves extremely slow. I've noticed that sometimes when I open an email it really bogs down or when I open multiple windows in firefox. I've cleared all caches and temp files, ran a scandisc and a defrag. I've also run a spybot. All clean and good. this has been just recently. I'm not sure what else to do. One other thing, i am running outlook 2000 and I have done bot a repair on office and a reinstall. Still having issues. Also my Windows updates are all updated as well as office updates. I have outlook 2002 that came with the Axim and i haven't installed that. Everything was working fine and I don't want to install that if I don't have to.
I've gone thru MSCONFIG and cleared out most everything and it still is slow. If I let the PC sit for a while it tends to speed up again then it gradually starts to slow especially as I open more Apps. This never used to happen that's why i question it. I have 512MB memory and that should be sufficient for what I do.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I called Dell for support and I got a support person that was more anxious about her upcoming vacation than helping me, so I hung up on her. I thought I'd try the experts here. Should have done that first. :approve:

I would do an hardware testing. Is the hard drive noisier than usual? Could you diagnose the RAM? What is the space left on your c:\ drive? Did you move the PC lately? A cable inside might be lose. Have you updated the video card with new drivers? Lots of question but check these. I will monitor your thread. Bonne chance!

You may have a problem with Outlook 2000 hogging the system when it's going out looking for mail. This is known problem with no remedy. One partial remedy for Outlook's problems is to shut off the automatic send/receive function of Outlook.

You've performed all the stuff needed to clear any fluff on the system. You also may have a hard drive that is failing, but not enough to halt the system, just enough to slow it down by i/o retries.

none of the above issues. I have a 13GB drive with 8.5GB free.
I don't know how to diagnose the RAM.

Thanks for your help :)

Memtest86 is one of the best solutions for that.

Have you checked the process processor utilization? That might tell you if there is a single process that is hogging everything.

Start, Run, Taskman

Memtest is good (Star is making sense yet again!).

Spybot is not enough for spyware. The most effective one is SpySweeper, by Webroot. It's about 85% effective (I believe this was Cnet testing) versus about 40% on spybot. The Microsoft one is also effective. I would run both of those. Microsoft is completely free, Spysweeper has a 30 day trial.

Agree I do...

Memtest86 is excellent (boot to a disk with it on it)
Webroot Spy Sweeper will get u all checked out.
Upgrade your Outlook (if it will let you on 98)
Dump Firefox! It is a resource hog... Get avant browser or Maxthon (get avant)
If you dont have a firewall, install one... Sygate is free and awesome!
What are you using for anti-virus? If your answer is anything besides NOD32 or Symantec Corp. than you need to change badly! Norton and McAfee are resource hogs.. NOD32 has passed 33 consecutive tests with a 100% detection rate, and it is super-good on resources... You can install a trial of it.
Never defrag with the windows defragger (or the norton one)... get perfect disk, or O & O...
If you have an old version of norton system works laying around, run the WinDoctor tool off of the cd (don't install it)
Download TuneUp Utils (free trial) and run all tests! Defrag the registry with this as well!

Open your case and make sure everything is screwed in tightly, and all connections are good... Check all cabling etc.
Keep an eye on all your fans to make sure they are working.
Using canned air, remove all dust from your pc.

If you need more help just ask!

I'm using Symantec Norton Antivirus, have a firewall SOHO.

Where can I get "Never defrag with the windows defragger (or the norton one)... get perfect disk, or O & O..."

I've checked everything inside and outside the box. Everything is secure and tight. I cleaned the inside which wan't too dirty. Two fans running and both working fine.

Anyone have a link to Microsoft spyware detector?

And pretty funny... I happen to have an old version of system works. I'll try to run windoctor off the cd now.

Well couldn't get windoctor to run from the cd, wants to be installed. I opted out of that option. I thought about the hard drive failing as well. Any way to test that for sure?

"You may have a problem with Outlook 2000 hogging the system when it's going out looking for mail. This is known problem with no remedy. One partial remedy for Outlook's problems is to shut off the automatic send/receive function of Outlook."

Is this also an issue with later releases of outlook and why would it suddenly start causing a problem?

I also got the firefox idea from users on this site who love it. Should I really kill that? And just taking it off the PC, could that improve anything? I haven't been using it and it still seems slow. one thing I just noticed when I opened an email from a specific person, each time I open it, the system really slows big time. When i close it, no issues. Everytime from this one person. No images in the e-mail, a couple web links though. No graphics at all. i guess I could do a system restore and see if that works. if I do that will it alter my Outlook changes I've made in calendar and such?

Another option is reformatting the Hard Drive.

Would reinstalling the operating system help?

OK, so here's the latest....

Check the mouse batteries!

That did it. Thanks for all your guys' help. I don't know what I'd do without you. This is the best place to come for anything! (well almost)

So should I really get rid of firefox? I like it.

yes, it leaks memory, even after it is closed... IE is just as good (better actually) if you do a few things to it!
