That just takes a few seconds. Then, you're good-to-go until the next time you open Outlook. Then, it prompts for the old CD again.
I’m using ActiveSync 3.8; WinXP; Dell Axim X50v.
I upgraded to Outlook 2003 (now called Microsoft Office Outlook 2003). I didn’t want to wait for the WM2005 upgrade later this year. Because many thought the actual program wouldn’t be included in the upgrade, I purchased an OEM version of Outlook 2003 for $20.
Wow, what a fantastic program! Email that took 5+ seconds to open now displays instantaneously. What a joy it is to zip through the email.
Outlook 2002 was so slow. I dreaded messing with it. I did most of my email sorting with the Axim, using the Think Outside BT Keyboard. Email opens quickly on the X50v. If I had known how great the 2003 version of Outlook was, I'd have gotten it earlier.
Outlook 2003 works great, but I am prompted to insert the Outlook 2002 source disk, because of the following error message:
ActiveSync cannot log on to Microsoft Outlook. Make sure Microsoft Outlook is installed and functioning correctly. You may need to restart your computer. You could have a conflict due to two folders on this computer that are named: C:\ Program Files\ Microsoft & C:\ Program Files\ Microsoft Office.
If so, rename the …Microsoft folder so it doesn’t contain the word “Microsoft.” If this folder contains subfolders, you may need to reinstall programs in the renamed folder. I have the following folders in C:\Program Files\ Microsoft...
ActiveSync
Encarta
Frontpage
Games
Money
Office
PictureIt!
Streets & Tips
Works
Works Suite 2002
Microsoft.net
Renaming 10 folders is not an option.
What do I change so I won't have to insert the Outlook 2002 CD every time ActiveSync tries to log on to Outlook 2003?
I will gladly keep the Outlook 2002 CD handy while waiting on the fix that will arrive with the WM2005 upgrade - - if I have to.
Any ideas on a fix?
Many thanks.

Since Outlook 2002 is on the new X51 CD, many will run into this problem upgrading to Outlook 2003 (I don't think it will be on the WM2005 upgrade, but not for sure.)
I think the problem has been solved.
I uninstalled Outlook 2003 (after hiding the archive & .pst files).
When I installed the full version of Outlook 2003, it merged with Outlook 2002. Outlook 2002 was still listed on the Add or Remove Programs list, but I couldn't remove it. My plan was to install Outlook 20002 again, hoping the new installation would contain the uninstall application, that would allow me to remove it.
But I couldn't install Outlook 2002 because of a missing Patch Package.
This time, I was successful when I searched Microsoft for "patch package." I got:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;295823
The problem: I was getting the error message
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the registry contains Microsoft Windows Installer information from an earlier Office installation.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings, and then reinstall Office. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings that are associated with your Office installation. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
msicuu2.exe (
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...bd/msicuu2.exe)
After running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (selecting Outlook 2002, to remove any unwanted registry settings for that program), the first thing I noticed is that Outlook 2002 was no longer on the Add or Remove Programs list.
After reinstalling Outlook 2003, I no longer have to insert the Outlook 2002 CD to load email, and sync.
For some reason, my previous searches weren't fruitful.
Microsoft has a complicated operating system that is way over my head.
I'm fortunate, that every now and then, even a blind pig will root up an acorn...
