Don't go with the cheapo case and power supply. Use one's from Antec or similar. Weak power supply can cause all kinds of problems from power flucuations.

Don't go with the cheapo CD/DVD drives, PLEXTOR Beige SATA DVD Burner Model PX-716SA/SW (or one like it) is what you want since you are going the SATA route. Plextor has one of the best ratings on burns not going south.

More money for the above, but worth it in the long run.

Don't forget UPS or at the least, surge protector. Suggest APC products. They haven't let me down, plus warranty will replace anything that gets hit by power spike. :approve:

I would have to agree with that. Right now I have a cheap case and I hate it. The more expensive ones are much better.
I have that same NEC DVD burner and it is AMAZING.

Actually, "cheap" and "low quality" are *not always* the same thing. For instance, Fortron PSUs are very high quality and relatively cheap. I would actually say that they're better than unmodified Antecs.

Same idea. Some cheap drives are actually good. Back in the Pentium Pro days, I had a cheap 50x Afreey CD-ROM that was truly fast and had few read problems! My I/O Magic DVD+-RW is also pretty cheap and performs great. And as for hard drives, all of the cheap ones I've worked with are good.

Yes, I agree with that. APC, Belkin, and Tripp-Lite are all good. A good way to get a cheap UPS is to find one with a bad battery and buy some replacements from a local electronics store. In some cases, it's possible to connect a UPS to a car battery or two to get really good runtime.

Did you know that it has been possible to boot from CDs since the Pentium Pro days?
Nowadays, if a floppy drive is needed, I recommend a USB floppy as it can also be used with laptops.

Also, be sure that someone in your house truly is a student or teacher, with the version of MS Office that you've included. If it's like it used to be, they do ask for validation of that during the registration process.

I don't think any of my computers have floppy drives.

I know I have one kicking around for my laptop somewhere but I'd struggle to find it. Might be at work in a box somewhere.

My inspiron has a floppy drive in it. It's a 2001/2 2650 model. Quite fortunately, really, as until fairly recently the hallowed courts of this country almost exclusively used computers with only floppy disk drives.

I still need the stupid floppy... dont know how to make a proper boot cd with things I need... you know like have the files I need for a proper boot cd (unless I can make a good 3.5" floppy image or something) and add things like the bios flash utility.

Frys and CompUSSR should have, $40 for the 160gb hdd.

Power advice... You are powering a $998 computer with a $41 powersupply+case... Lets assume the case costs $20.. $20 power supply for a $1000 computer? Please consider something like an Antec NeoPower or Fortron.
I knew a few people who said
"Yeah this power supply will do just fine..."
"But its a cheapie $20 psu" "nah its 500 watts!!!"
"500 watts is arbitrary for those cheap psus"
*Pushes button*
...
...
"Whats that smell.. why doent my computer start?"

-__- perhaps I jinx people.

*a little off topic but:

I don't have a floppy drive on my computer but I have tons TONS of floppys from the old days, Maybe 200-300 1/4 of those wouldn't work cause they were for Amiga. I wish I still had a floppy drive
