Where can I learn how to setup DSL linux?

I have three days before school starts... I want it to be productive to the next level.

In my theme of many computers... most of which get rededicated for other purposes I have a old AMD 500mhz computer with about 160mb of ram.

I want that to run DSL and just run a VNC server when it boots up so I can connect to it on boot from my normal computer.

I have considered using a hard drive with it but I think I want to run it as a Live distrobution... maybe run it off a SD if I could boot it that way.

I tried to run the VNC server when I ran it in Virtual PC but lets just say taht I get the icons but the vnc server never actually runs (to my knowlege... well it doesnt ask for configuraton)

SO any guides on where I can set up a headless setup like this? Oh I did read about a headless configuration that involved a floppy that sounded neat but woudl that boot a VNC style server or some terminal server type thing? http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Headless_Knoppix

http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin/fo...ST;f=10;t=8016 souns right but seems like a new language to me

I'm confused.

You can run a headless Mickeysoft OS if you want. And are you referring to Digital Subscriber Line when you say DSL? Are you planning on using a PCI DSL modem? I'm not sure I'm seeing the relevance.

I have an NT4 machine that runs with not monitor, mouse, KB. I just VNC into it (VNC runs as a service) as needed. No linux, no DSL etc.

Er..
DSL = Damn Small Linux a 50mb distro of linux.

I like windows... linux is confusing but I think worth trying out for fun.
I dont want to partition and all that fun stuff and I have a sacrifical computer I am willing to dedicate to linux, 500mhz runs win2k terribly but might be neat with linux. I want it to run a VNC server so I will have control of it once it boots and I wont have to swap my monitor from one pc to the other

First off if you can get a real version of linux like slackware that is small but runs off the harddrive as you will get better results because its not running off of the RAM.

I know you can run it as a live CD. Puppy Linux is very similar and works well off the CD. I never got DSL running because I liked Pupp Linux. The problem I found was I couldn't get my Axim syncing. I am sticking with Windows for now.

The above link has pretty good instructions for setting up DSL for USB Key booting.
I run DSL on a 128 MB USB Key with wireless support on a Dell 610 and a Dell 9200 using a pcmcia wifi card. It's nice to have access to your HD files if Windows doesn't boot. Also POP / IMAP email and Fire fox and much more under 50 Megs!
