Linksys WCF12: Newer = Better?

Now that the new Linksys WCF12 driver is released (the one that is supposedly compatible with PPC 2003), the question remains about whether it is an improvement: Is it better than using the older driver with PPC 2002? Is it better than the work around using another card's driver?

From my research so far, it seems the new Linksys driver works, but it also seems to be lacking a configuration utility allowing users, for example, to adjust the power settings. Or am I missing something?

I'm interested in your experiences and conclusions so far.

Once u run the setup, go the directory where it threw the files. Inside, there should be a file called PRISMNDS.DLL, copy this file into the WINDOWS folder of you axim, once its there, stick in ur CF card and check out what happens.

WCF12 problems on 2003

I have the same problem. Upgraded to 2003 and now WCF12 new driver keeps failing and there is no .dll file by that name. How can we get it?

Exclamation

Heres what you do people.

If you want the signal meter to work like it did in pocket pc 2002 follow all steps.

If you dont care about the singnal meter just folllow steps 2, 4, 9 & 10

DO NOT USE THE 1.1 DRIVER FROM LINKSYS SITE. IT DOES NOT WORK. you can only get a 169 ip address. i spent 40 minutes on the linksys support online chat trying to get that to work and in the end they had me go back to the beta driver.

1 . Down load the pocket pc 2002 driver from here rename .zip to .cab

2. Download the 2003 Beta Driver from here

3. Copy the cab file to and install on your Dell Axim X5 (I have the 400 MHz version but it should also work on the 300 MHz)

4. Unzip and install the beta 2003 driver from your computer through activesync. you shouldn't see any activity on your Axim.

5. Undock and insert your wcf12 in the CF slot. it should recognize it immediately. if not the name is prismnds.dll

6. it should be assigned a 192.168.1.xxx ip via dhcp if you have it turned on, but you can not connect to the internet yet because it tells you you need to set up a proxy server.

7. The signal meter should appear at the bottom of the screen (red or blue) click on it and pick the "Advanced Configuration"

8. Create a profile by typing in any name in the profile line (i used home) and your ssid in the ssid line.

9. Under the connections tab in the settings panel, click wireless ethernet. you should see your network there, if it says available click and hold then choose connect.

10. Click on the network adapters tab, and make sure the your network card connects to "The Internet" not "Work"

You should be able to connect to the internet and your network now.

lmtuxinc, Thanks. Does that trick also add any other configuration options, such as the ability to adjust the card's power settings?

Great post!

I'd seen several other posts on this card and like many others had resigned themselves to the beta driver, but not having the tool icon.

lmtuxinc, I second that..Great POst. I just had a crash and hard reset. It took me days before I got my linksys to work before the crash. Then I misplaced all the notes I had made that got it to work the first time.
Been working several hours trying to get it to work again. Found your post and followed your notes and worked the first time. I did copy the PRISMNDS.DLL file dated 08/03 to windows, and used "my work network" for network management.
Using the signal meter as welll.

Yeah, my axim died on me and i had to get a replacement from dell, so i had to search all over the place to figure out how to get the new 1.1 driver to work and it just wouldnt for me.
After that i found out that you could use the 2002 software with the 2003 beta driver, and its near perfect.

I'm glad that you got it to work with the "work" setting though.

I click the setup button everytime it just said finished did not even prompt next button. I did uninstall the wcf from PDA , later onr on I found out I need to use my previous version of linksys driver so it will uninstall the Driver I guess, then I click setup again. this time it installed successfully and works fine but I did not find out where I can install WCF monitor application.
