Hi,
this question isn't really related to my axim, but i was having trouble finding the answer elsewhere on the net, so i was hoping the knowledgeable aximsite community might be able to help out.
I'm looking for a wireless network adapter for my desktop pc.
having a hard time deciding between a USB and PCI adapter.
I was leaning towards a USB adapter because you can move the antenna around, which would be good for me, because my computer is kind of in a corner. But i've heard the USB takes CPU processing power. I have a new computer, Pentium 4 and have USB 2.0 ports. Basically, I really want to know if PCI adapters are superior in speed and reception than equivalent USB adapters.
I would go with the USB. Considering the low bandwidths that we're talking about there is probably no reason to be concerned about throughput and processing power.
USB will be so much more portable and like you say, you can move it around for optimal antenna placement.

As a counterpoint, I've had a D-Link USB, a motorola USB, and a D-Link PCI card. Of the 3, the PCI card is the only one that never gave me any trouble. It seems like XP has trouble managing multiple USB devices at once. Namely, I had trouble with internet access when cradling my axim to sync with the PC. I'd say go with the PCI card, if you've got the free spot.

I've had MUCH better reception from PCI adapters and I like the fact that many of them will let you connect an extension cable to the antenna to position it better.

Pretty much all D-Link's PCI cards have the ability. They even sell their own extension that they call a "Desktop Adapter" that includes the longer cable and a antenna with a stand.

Remember, also, that you can pop the USB WiFi adapter off and use it with another PC (desktop, laptop). Put the drivers on a USB flash drive, and you have considerable portability. Maybe even install firefox there, too, and make your bookmarks portable.

I got a USB adaptor so I could use it at work and at home. Works well in both situations with an ad-hoc connection. I've never used a card adaptor so I don't know about relative power output, but the ease of use of the USB dongle is a big plus for me.
