I've been using the D-Link DCF-660W for about 3+ months now, with very few problems. The only problems I've ever had with it was when I tried to install the PRISM drivers and there were still fragments remaining of the D-Link drivers. But that was fixed easily.
As of yesterday, everytime I insert the card the Axim freezes up. If I take the card back out, the Axim resumes to function normally. After troubleshooting it for about an hour, I finally decided to just hard reset and reinstall PRISM drivers. Still had the same problem. So I hard reset again and installed the D-Link v2.0 drivers. Same problem still occurred. Finally I hard reset and installed the original drivers. Didn't freeze this time, but gives an error that "InitializeCard Failed". So after about 3 hours of my time troubleshooting it, I've finally decided that either the card is bad or the CF slot is bad.
So I tried out a CF memory card, and it works just fine reading and writing. In conclusion, I've decided that the DCF-660W is a goner. This is not normal for a WiFi CF card, as I've had friends who have had them for well over a year (not D-Link though) without problems. I've experienced the same thing with a D-Link PCMCIA card before, and just threw it out. The CF card was a good deal at first, but in the long run it looks like I would have been better off buying a Socket or something.
If anyone has experienced these same symptoms and found a way to overcome them, please let me know so I don't have to shell out money. At the end of the semester, I can stand to save all the money I can.
:)
I've been using Dlink wireless products for over a year and had no problem.
When I installed my compact flash 660 though I had the following problem. I installed the driver that came on the cd and they did not install properly the control software icon dd not appear in the config folder. So I went to Dlink site and downloaded the latest driver version. It install fine... but did not work, it appeared to have to drivers install, the old and the new one.
Impossible to get rid off the old one. I eventually had to hard reset. Re-install the whole lot and the latest drivers. It works perfect since then.
I also have a DI614+ Dlink wireless router and a 650+ pcmcia. Have put over thirty Dlink 900+ access points and about a hundrerd Dlink 520+ for my clients. (I am no a Dlink dealer) and never had a single problem.
Setting up a D-Link wifi network today actually. Got the DI614+ Dlink wireless router, a DWL-520+ PCI Adapter & a DWL-120 USB Adapter...all is working fine so far, but that isn't saying much :p
I've been looking into purchasing a DCF-660W CompactFlash Adapter for my Axim, but decided to put it off until I really needed it. I havent heard any other negative reviews of this card....but I may wait awhile to do some more research. Is it not still under warranty though?
I've had the D-link card for a while now and I had some troubles at first with the install. After installing the software and inserting the card, I found that doing a soft reset would enable the card. This holds true for all wireless cards, including the Dell. A soft reset always seems to cure my wireless problems. But lately, I have been losing connection all the time. I try to specify a SSID and it will hold for a while, but after an hour or so, I'll have to go back and re-configure the whole thing. I would not buy a D-link card, I recommend the socket or ambicon card. I have seen the best results with one of the two. Good luck in your quest for the right CF woreless card.
Any updates? My DCF-660W started acting up yesterday as well. I can't get the Axim to recognize it, even after a hard reset. Even if I get it working, the slightest bump will make it lock up. I also noticed that the plastic casing at the top is a little lose; wonder if it got bumped around a little too much or something..... How much of a pain is it to get an RMA from D-Link?

Update for me is that mine still isn't working. :)
Casing is fine on this one, and it's never seen ANY abuse at all. I've given up on it, and plan on getting another card in the near future.....just not D-Link.
I have the D-Link DCF-660W card and has been great - after the usual install issues. My only comment is that I have barely used the card ... just to roam around the house ... show off to my friends ... or to surf the web and read email while watching TV.
I think the software provided is likely the problem, as I noticed when I updated the ROM, resinstalling the software was painful. :rolling:
All-in-all, I have no complaints with my D-Link network at home, to include the DI614+ and DWL650+
My D-link card is continually getting worse. I went back to Best Buy and they told me I was pretty much out of luck. D-link isn't even worth the time yalking to, by the time I get a new card, I will already have boughten another one. I think I'm gonna go with ambicon this time, I haven't heard of many problems with it.
Mt D-link card feels very unstable, the top wiggles and feels broken. If I hold it in the slot with alot of force it will work fine. But the time I take pressure off of the top, It quits working. I just hope the CF slot on my ax is still OK
Has anyone else tried to send their card back to D-link, and if so, how did that whole process go.
Mike
Dlink product especially the CF wireless is suck so is their tech support. They hung up on me while asking me to wait after I already waited a long time to get to talk to them. Men I was furious and cussing eventually I gave up. Couldn't get the wireless CF to work after spending hours monkey with the software install reinstall and configuration.
I am returning it to get my money back. Don't buy Dlink wireless CF unless you enjoy wasting your time calling them and messing with the useless installation that didn't work. I am going to buy Netgear or Ambicom CF. No more Dlink of any kind for me.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I have had the same "hang up" with many other companies, and it is just a part of phone system glitches (as well as glitches in the heads of people who don't know how to use the phone systems). What I have started doing is: as soon as you get to the right person, immediately ask him/her for their direct extension. Or give them your phone #...or both. This way if you accidentally get cut off the line, it will be easy to immediately get back to the right person.

I will agree that DLINK support sucks. I got a guy who would not even listen to what I was telling him. I even prompted him to pull the manual out, so we could walk through what I did, so he could see where I was coming from. I know he was searching through his resources, and even told me he was talking to a level 2 tech. I personally didnt think he had a clue. I get transferred to a level 2 and then get put back on hold for another 30 mins. I hung up, called back and the guy told me that the "PDA Guru" had gone home. I did manage to swap out my DLINK card. We will see if this one works.
I called D-Link support and was on hold for about half an hour. The RMA tech that finally talked to me talked so fast that I could barely understand what he was saying. He repeatedly took down incorrect information even though I spelled everything out for him. Apart from that, getting the RMA wasn't much of a hassle. They sent me a new card and I'm shipping the old one back in the same box.

I have been using my DI 614+ and a DWL 650+ for about 6 months and have had no problems at all. As soon as I start using my 660, sometimes I can' t use my laptop and Axim at the same time. Also, I used to have a strength bar at the bottom of my axim screen, but did a hard reset after the infamous "Rom Update", and after re-installing I don't have it anymore?

Hey slothdog,
What is the number you called D-link at. I'm interesting in doing the same thing now. That card corrupts my whole axim. Thanks
