Question x50v and v551 BT dialup access to ISP -- not Data Plan

Is it possible to use a moto v551 to call my isp dialup number so that I can just use my cell minutes to access the internet. I know it will be slow, I just want to grab some email. It's not for prolonged surfing.

That being said and i have read the post (http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=109086) that seems to do just that. but i cannot get it to work.

I have successfully paired the pda and the phone and the pda causes the phone to call the isp number, but it quickly disconnects and says there is no modem present.

I have also successfully set up a bt du connection on the pc and from there, I can see that the isp number is dialed and then immediately says no connection.

I have called the isp number from the cell phone and there is indeed a lag before the isp modem connects. If I wait long enough I do get the familiar modem drone.

So I am wondering if there is an init string that will instruct the modem to wait after the connection to allow the isp modem to connect. i've got three days to get this working!!!

TIA
Dee

ps I know there have been several posts about about using minimal cell data accounts to access the internet, but that is not what I want to do.

Did you check with your cell phone carrier if it's allowed? I also have a V551 but cannot use my minutes for dialup because my carrier has diabled that feature.

I was afraid that might be the case. I'm with cingular and it has been hard to find out what their packages actually get you.

But I still want know how they know it's a pda. I can call the modem and eventually hear the modem sound on the cell phone???

Bad News: The only data calls that Cingular will allow are data calls to their Data Teir Services.
Worse News: It can be really expensive to call for long amounts of time if you don't have a plan.
Better News: You can call their numbers and get relativley decient speeds, but it does cost money.
Best News: I have Verizon, and they have the MOU thing, so instead of being counted as Data Time, and counting it as Data. It only counts as minutes.

They can't tell if it is a PDA, simply a DUN bluetooth device. Now I think these instructions will work. All credit goes the the address mentioned and the poster who posted them.

EDIT: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=82337
The one above is so much easier, sorry just found it.

So it sounds like this can't be done with Cingular, right? I have the v551 also and would LOVE to be able to do this.

Lucky you, not.

Cingular is really annoying about this stuff. They will not allow you to dial any external ISP, unless its their own Data Tier 2 services (GPRS).

I think these are the right settings, but BE CAREFUL, use it for like a minute, and then see what your bill says. A friend got seriously billed for using for like a couple of hours.

Dialing number: *99***1#
User name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Domain: (leave blank)
Extra dial-string modem commands: +CGDCONT=1, "IP", "WAP.CINGULAR"

I used my verizon v710 to connect my ipaq to the internet, but I don't remember how. So, I can't test it. Anyone connect a 51v to verizon with the v710?

Update: This does not seem possible with Cingular. Even if you sign up for the 1 mb promo, it is considered a media net plan and does not have access to the data switch. When i look at the websessions setup, there are several configurations including a csd phone number, but so far no combination seems to be working. I'll try some more, but right now it's just one more reason not to be in love with sbc!
