Accessing shared folders on PC from X51v via wi-fi
Looking at other posts it appears that prior to WM5 many people were accessing shared folders on the PC with 3rd party applications such as resco. I have not found many threads that address how to connect to a shared folder using file explorer with WM5. Is this not possible?
Each time I try to access a shared folder on my PC using file explorer from the X51v via wi-fi I get the following message: "can not connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap setting". Going to the settings page does not yield any obvious changes that need to be made.
If anyone has succesfully accomplished this can you share your method?
If this connection is not possible, is it possible through the activesync connection?

Do you have any firewalls running on your PC? Try shutting them down (just temporarily).
Also, give vxUtil a look. If you know how to use some of the networking tools, something may open up. At a minimum, you can attempt to ping your PC to ensure the networking is working (hmm, sounds funny, doesn't it?).
I don't recall if there's a traceroute program with vxUtil, but that'd be another thing to try.
In the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists. If you then tap the Edit... button under either list and the Proxy Settings (tab), the top box (This network connects to the Internet) should be checked but leave everything else on this page blank. After tapping OK, make sure both dropdown lists are still set to My Work Network and OK your way back to the Today page and then soft reset.
Activate the wireless, then, in the File explorer, Menu, Open Path, New Path..., and enter the network name of your PC followed by a backslash. It should show any shared folders that are available.
I find Total Commander easier to work with and it allows you to use files on the PC (rather than just copying them to your Axim).

Worked perfectly! Thanks for your detailed instructions!
Great post, thanks alot, I'm up and running with shared folders but still have a couple of things to sort out.
I have aol broadband on my pc and want to share my internet connection via WiFi with my X51v.
Every thing pings fine apart from my internet connection, so I guess that is part of the problem, although it is set up as a shared connection.
The following extract in my internet connection as reported by "ipconfig"
There in also a yellow triangle warning saying my network did not assign an IP address, is this because of AOL? does anyone have the same problem? can it be solved?

The 169 number is self assigned by devices expecting an IP from a server but not receiving one.
What is your Axim actually connected to, a wireless adapter on the PC with the dial up? If so, it would be an ad-hoc connection and ICS on the modem should be acting as a DHCP server to assign the IPs. It typically uses the 192.168.0.x numbers and the wireless adapter on the PC would have x=1 and also would show as the gateway on the PPC (and I believe the DNS). Some users have found it necessary to have the wireless of the PPC active before starting it on the PC in order for the adapters to become associated and the proper IPs handed out.
Ad-hoc connections can be really difficult to get working and I've never found an effective troubleshooting process.
