Ad-Hoc Problem with X3i

I have been trying off and on for a while to get an ad-hoc setup going with my Axim X3i and my desktop PC running XP Home with a Linksys 802.11b USB adapter. I know my Axim WiFi works as I can successfully connect to access points and web surf. I have read the tutorial here but I still have a couple of questions.

1) The tutorial states "Make sure the CF WiFi card is in AD-HOC mode." Well, my WiFi isn't on a CF card, and, how do I make sure my WiFi "card" in in AD-HOC mode?

2) How I set up my PC for AD-HOC mode? The tutorial doesn't seem to address that at all. It does mention how to set up for ICS (internet connection sharing).

Thanks.

There must be a few dozen, maybe even a couple of hundred wireless adapters for PCs. It just isn't feasible for me to describe how to set up ad-hoc on all of them so, RTM.

For the PPC, turn on the wireless adapter and go into the Configure Wireless Networks page (Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Advanced, Network Card) and select "Only Computer-to-computer" under the Networks to access:

I finally got it to work. Thanks, ikehiker, for the tutorial. Prior to my last question, I had the wireless link working, but I didn't know it because I couldn't do anything (sync or access internet). After creating a new network with ICS (internet connection sharing), I could access the web. But I still wasn't sure that I was connect to my PC because there were other open networks nearby that I have been able to connect to, and, ActiveSync still wouldn't work. After changing the PC specified to sync with in ActiveSync, it started working. I can now sync and surf the web. Yay. Pretty cool. I also enabled data encryption and network authentication, so I should in theory have a secure link. I do have a question on the PC side of the link. How do I verify whether another (undesired) device is connected to my PC? When I show available wireless networks, my Axim network is shown as connected all the time, regardless of whether my Axim is connected or not. I'm fairly certain that when I enable my wireless adapter my Axim is connecting and authenticating properly, due to the changing of the status icons, but the "connect" status shown all the time on the PC concerns me.

Thanks.

I don't have ICS operating on my PC so I'm not sure if it shows the connections or not but that's the first place I'd look. Then, the PC's wireless adapter may also show ad-hoc associations but I think that would be in it's utilities. Even though it's possible to crack security, if you've enabled security (I assume by 'data encryption' you mean WEP or WPA), I doubt that anyone has accessed it.
