I've done a lot of research regarding PDA tethering to a cell phone for internet access. One thing that is consistent is that I've yet to find anyone that really knows how to best accomplish this with an Axim.
There seems to be a lot of guessing on here, and finding solutions that work. Has anyone actually been able to connect their Axim via a cell phone to the internet, and obtain a fast connection (EDGE for instance)?
If you think you have, then please post your connection speeds for proof. There are several sites to check your connection, however, one that I use that is geared to cell phones/PDA's is http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
Also, please post your service provider and phone. This should be interesting. Thanks
OK, so I own an X51 (MID) and a Motorola V710. Initially I (along with many others) was unable to get the Axim to pair with the V710. Well, it paired, but showed no services, even though we all know it supports DUN. Finally after what seemed like an eternity, I figured it out. I had to go into the registry and force the Axim to see the DUN service. Look at this thread.

Addition who needs that kind of stuff any way huh?

Well, I am able to get my x51v tethered to a Tmobile Razr v3 w/ bluetooth, and get on Internet with their $19 Unlimited internet plan. I only get GPRS speed because the Razr is not EDGE compatible.
I didn't have to do any hacks, just paired the phone with the Axim. Dialup Networking showed up, and then I following the instruction in the sticky post in this forum, and everything worked on the first try.
One thing for sure is that you need to get an internet plan with your cell phone provider.

Thanks for the response. I know how to use my cell phone to connect, however, I'm almost certain that I'm just getting regular GPRS speed. I'm experiencing about the same connection speed that you posted. I'm still looking for someone that really has their Axim setup with their cell phone, and has a fast connection. I would bet that the guy with the RAZR that isn't EDGE capable would get about the same speed as us.
But what kind of information are you looking for? What phone and service/provider do you have? Are you not getting the speed you think you are supposed to get?
It depends on the services and phone that you have. I know with Tmobile, you can get EDGE speed, if you have a phone that supports EDGE, and you are in an area that you have EDGE service. There is no different in price or configuration of the PC/PDA. I believe Cingular is the same, maybe they charge differently for EDGE/UTMS service. For Verizon, I believe they only sell the EV-DO service now. Basically, the configuration is pretty much the same for all services, which is DUN.
If you are connecting with GPRS, then there is no way you can have the same speed as coolbre304. He is getting over 100kbps, so I am assuming he's on EV-DO with Verizon. GPRS connects at around 33kbps. So my connection is only about 30-33kbps. It's too slow by today's broadband standard
No, not EV-DO, thats only on the E815. I have the V710, which is 1xRTT speeds, and according to both about 114 kbps

you can get it (broadband) on V815, or LG 8100 or LG9800 but you have to pay for broadband speeds.. otherwise you just get the 1xRTT speeds. They have only let you have it now for a few weeks.

I'm a newbie and following the suggestions here I just (and I mean JUST) got my x51v to use my Motorola V551 and get on the net. I'm with Cingular and have the unlimited media plan which is something like $25 a month. It wasn't worth it with just the phone but if I can use the bouncing new baby Axim then it is well worth it.
That said, it was just a GPRS connection. I think the V551 has EDGE but I have no idea how to get EDGE working.
IndyJoe,
Could you re-title this post. It is more about network/phone/ax combinations and speed than about actual tethering. Just to help the folks who may have basic tethering and connection questions.
Well here's my question to you folks, why is my speed faster? I just have a regular V710 and I got the speeds I posted above? Is this becuase of the time of day and traffic or the whole CDMA/GSM/GPRS thing? Just curious.

Axim: X50v
Phone: Samsung A920
Connection: Bluetooth
Provider: Sprint
100k speed test: 186 kbit/sec with 0.524s latency
600k speed test: 281 kbit/sec with 0.782s latency
Yep, surfing the Web on NetFront on Sprint's network is indistinguishable from Wi-Fi for me, so I'm loving life with the new phone. Although I'm not looking forward to the new monthly bill...
coolbre304, the reason our speeds so much higher are because we're using Sprint and Verizon's EV-DO networks (CDMA). I don't believe Cingular or T-Mobile are using EV-DO.
But I have a V710, which only has 1xRTT, not EV-DO, which is what the E815 has.
