Some vendors are now promoting broadband wireless for laptops. I have an X-51. Is there a CF card available that will allow me to hook up to the Internet from anywhere versus searching for a wifi hotspot?
I use Verizon broadband and connect either the laptop (USB cable to phone) or the Axim X51V (via bluetooth) and get 550KB speed according to the speed test at dslreports.com I am quite pleased, and the $59 a month for unlimited access is fair, I guess. It works everywhere I go. :)
Wow, 550KB speed?
thats faster than my cable! then again, my cable isnt very fast. Verizons broadband just misses us because im on a mountain. According to the maps, the coverage just goes around that mountain.

its faster than my cable too because we didn't upgrade to the 3Mbps line yet..
I'm on EDGE right now and its pretty nice to have, I've only been using it on my cingular 8125, haven't tethered or anything, but its great, especially at 20 bucks a month for unlimited access
speed test at: www.dslreports.com/mspeed works for PPC. 550 down/170 up w/Verizon Broadband bluetooth to Axim. some days seems faster and some not as fast. It is pretty decent in my opinion. Especially considering that it works where there is no Hotspot, or no Access point, or away from home or office. Just a few years ago a 384 DSL line was considered fast, and a 768 is what a lot of DSL cheap plans offer.

actually i think that what we have coming into our house is a 384 cable line :rolling:
i hate it, we're having problem with speeds to begin with, as in most of the times they aren't even that fast, but i think we're going to try the 3Mbps this month

Hmmmmmm.... $20 a month for unlimited access, plus $10 for the extra line, you get broadband anywhere for $30 a month?

no, i have EDGE, not the verizon broadband. but yes, its $20 a month for the internet and of course i have voice time as well, and another line on there, so its more than just $20, but the $20 is for the internet alone.

No way, that's the exact setup that I was looking for. Hookme up CaptKen, tell me what I need to do to get this setup. What plan do you signup for and what type of phone do you need?
I'm currently on Verizon's family plan, my brother added me. My phone doensn't have bluetooth and I don't think we have any data access.
Although, verizon's phone signal to my home isn't too good, I only get two or three bars. So maybe EDGE would be a better choice?
You get 15 days to try Verizon and can return if you are not happy. Any Bluetooth phone works. LG 8100 or LG9800 or Motorola 815 all work, and others too if bluetooth. Family plan fine, thats what I have, I could use it as dialup modem to an ISP but nothing would ever give me the broadband speed until I went for their data plan, which they just started in Feb I think, maybe late January. With the axim just pair the phone to Axim, set up new modem connection, set number to dial as #777 and user name of your10digitnumber@vzw3g.com and for the password use vzw. open any application that needs internet and connection should be automatic, but if not go to start/settings/connections/manage existing/then press and hold verizon (if you named it that) and click connect. That is for the Axim. I also tether the phone to my laptop, and get the same type of speeds (400-700 KB/s) with USB cable and my LG phone. $59 doesn't seem that harsh to have high speed access in so many places. I even get coverage and broadband speeds at Catalina Island as well as Los Angeles, and in Hawaii, too.
Since all the companies give you 15 to 30 days to try, you can experiment with each of them if you want and judge speed and coverage for yourself in your area. I am with Verizon because other than ATT (Cingular) the rest have poor, if any, coverage on the ocean, and very limited coverage in Hawaii. Verizon works better for me, because of their coverage, but some of the others have less expensive plans, I think.
