GSM cellular modem for Axim X50?
Hi,
I have read reviews about the CDMA USB cellular modem CCU-550 manufactured by http://www.cmotech.com/.
I understand that this type of cellular modem requires a USB host in the Pocket PC, and the Axim X50 does not have this feature.
Does anyone know if there's a GSM cellular modem that would fit the X50?
Thanks.

Yes there are Compact Flash GSM\GPRS Cards you can get. Check out Expansys and run a search.
Things to consider; I haven't seen any Compact Flash cards with EDGE support. Also they're like $200 + and suck a lot of battery power. They also don't route the audio for calls through the Pocket PC. So you have to connect a 2.5 mm headset too it, no using that fancy bluetooth headset with it. Also bear in mind the companies who produced these probably arn't still supporting them. You most likely will be out of luck for a driver if you want to run Windows Mobie 5, with 2003 SE you should be fine. If you just want it for Data like text messaging and email with very light phone use, its not bad. If you really want a Pocket PC with phone functionality you might as well put the $200 - $300 towards a new Pocket PC Phone and sell the X50. But you'll loose a lot of cool features, I would really love a Pocket PC Phone that does everything my x50v does (plus usb 2.0 client\host). I'm waiting for it, but I think I will be waiting a long time.

I would need it only for browsing/emails
My X50 has WM2003SE and due to the many problems with the WM2005 upgrade, I'm not planning it at the moment.
I'm not clear on how the card would connect to the X50? I assumed it would be via an adaptor to the connector in the bottom of the PDA? ie, just like connecting a sync cable?
Also, are you familiar with any specific model?
Thank you.

i have the audiovox (got it as a freebie from Dell) and it works quite well from data. Horribly flawed for voice calls, but does GPRS well.

I do have a BT cell phone
But comms are VERY slow.
So I'm looking for a H/W solution where I can insert my SIM card and enjoy a higher speed.

well you don't want sd/cf/bt so you've run out of connection methods.

Apparently I wasn't clear....
I AM interested in a BT solution. This is the method I use today whenever I can't find a hotspot.
I was just thinking whether an external GSM/GPRS cellular modem would be faster than my BT phone.

Or maybe there's another possibility?
Can a USB modem be connected to the Cradle port using a sync cable, which has a USB end?

Psionandy,
Thank you for the info.
One last question: If there's a dedicated BT modem out there (rahter than using my BT phone), do you think it would be faster than my BT phone?
