File sharing via wifi home network

I have a home network that works fine: a wireless router, 2 notebooks, a backup drive, and a printer.

I can share files and printers no problem.

I have an Axim x51 WM5 that I would like to use to access shared file folders on these machines.

I connect the Axim to my wireless router using WLAN.

I go to File Explorer>>Open Path>>\\computername\

Gets me the following error message:

"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings."

I get the same error message no matter which machine I try to access.
I have tried disabling the firewall on my PC--that doesn't work.

On the other hand, I have been able to use Terminal Services Client to remotely control one of the laptops-but only if I input the IP address of the PC, not the computer name.

If I dock the Axim, I can access the shared folder files on the PC that it is connected to, but if I try to access folders on my backup drive, I get the message: "The network path was not found."

Does anyone have any suggestions? What am I supposed to do with connection settings to get this to work? Do I need to set up a VPN? How do I do that?

Thanks.

I think you need Resco File Explorer in order to browse/connect to your network drives or machines.

No, you can 'access' shared folders using the built-in file explorer but Resco (and Total Commander) allows you to actually use files from the remote location (the built-in just lets you copy/move files between the PC and PPC).

Marceline, you need to set both dropdown lists to "My Work Network." Check the Networking your Pocket PC section of the WiFi Guide for more details.

Hi Ike, I tried that, but no dice. I still got the connection error message.

I hate adding more and more crap to my machine, but I downloaded Resco and it works.

Why is it that a little software company with presumably limited resources can accomplish something that MS can't?

How many different programs am I going to have to buy and install that do what the programs that came with WM5 are supposed to do in the first place?

I thought I was supposed to be able to open *.jpg files on a networked drive from Resco but no dice. I can't play *.wma files using WM10 from the networked drive either.

Argh.
