Ok, I finally got it all to work. I have the Ambicom BT200. It comes with a CF to PCMCIA adapter so I can use it in my notebook too.
I worked on it until 5AM my time. I guess I don't take no for an answer very well. :D The Ambicom is a pretty good product. The install went well. I also got it to work with my Mitsumi USB BT adapter as well.
To clarify, I tried both the Mitsumi USB BT and the Ambicom CF/PCMCIA BT200 in my notebook with another Ambicom BT200 in my Axim. It is practically nirvana now. I can't believe it actually works as advertised.
The holdup for me was that no where in any instructions does it say I CAN'T initiate the ActiveSnyc from within the ActiveSync program itself. Ambicom install program installed another little applet to initiate it. I absolutely could not do it from ActiveSync no matter what I tried.
I fould the little aplet by luck in my program menu. Once I fired it up, my first sync didn't go exactly as planned. It said I had a sync error. Tried it again. Same thing. I then added a new contact ON my Axim, snyc'd again and SUCCESS!!! :D :D From that point on it worked flawlessly. I can now browse the web from my Axim just like I have a WiFi card in it. I can be about 20' feet or so away from the PC and it still works well.
I knew it should work as I could see both devices in the discovery process AND I could push a file from the Axim to my PC. I do recommend the Ambicom product as the doco is pretty good and it's utilities are good too. The sync process feels faster than USB although the upgrade to ActiveSync 3.7 did help a lot!
Also the Ambicom has a slick little dialer feature I can use with my Bluetooth phone, Sony T68i.
If anyone else has any question, I think I troubleshot a lot of connection issues so I'll be glad to help if I can. Next on my list is getting my Bluetooth GPS set up. ;)
One last note, since getting it setup, the sync has never dropped out. It always seems to finish fine. Also when I browse the device, it's much faster than it used to be.
