Hello I am new to the forum but I did a seach on this topic and have come up empty.
I just bought a second hand Dell Axim X3 (wifi) and I was going to use it instead of the Toshiba E740 at work. I have a medium/low quality AP signal at the office, to which the E740 is not able to connect. So I bought a Dlink wifi range extender, which allows the E740 to connect with no problem. The range extender acts as a relay, which repeats the existing wifi signal, using the same SSID, and channel. There is no security settings on this AP.
In any case, the X3 CAN connect with the low quality wifi signal, but as soon as the range extender becomes active, the X3 is not able to communicate with it. It does detect and connect to the new signal (so it says) but IE will not load anything. Whereas the Toshiba will connect with no problems whatsoever. I wonder if it is because the X3 can connect with both signals and gets confused?
Does the extender work on the same channel and is it possible to set it on a different one? If so, that would be the first thing I would try.

Thank you for responding. The documentation states that the extender must have the same SSID and the channel as the AP being relayed. And so far it has worked for my Toshiba (but then the Toshiba is too weak to connect to the originating AP). I have just updated the X3 with ROM and all the drivers. I will try again tomorrow and see if it makes any difference.

Thank you for responding. The range extender does not have (perhaps it does not need) many customizable settings. It is pretty much site survey, and connect. What is a pre-amble?

It's the header before the data packet is sent.
There are two forms, long and short. Imagine you're in a room with people and you need to get your friend's attention so you can talk to him.
Long preamble would be that you should "Hey John Smith" and then start talking.
Short preamble would be shouting "Hey John" and then start talking.
What's key is that both devices need to agree as to whether it's "Hey John Smith" or "Hey John" before they can talk. If there is a mismatch they can't talk.
There IS a third setting which attempts to auto-detect the pre-amble and that works the vast majority of the time too.
Is the firmware up to date on the wireless extender?

The extender firmware is up to date. I just looked at the device manual
again (DLINK AirPlus G model DWL-G710). There is no mention of any pre-amble.

Thanks again for responding.

As a last resort, I use an iPAQ 4150 and for my network driver there is a registry key:
HKLM\Comm\TIACXWLN1\Param\dot11ShortPreamble which is set to 1 by default (to enable short pre-amble).
TIACXWLN1 is my NIC driver, yours will be different.
Some devices let you adjust the pre-amble through the GUI but the iPAQ doesn't and I'm pretty sure the X3 doesn't either.
If you're feeling brave and confident you could have a look in the HKLM\Comm section of your registry and see if you can find the keys for the NIC driver, and then see if there is a settings related to the pre-amble.
Just ensure that you make a backup of the device first.
Unless anyone else has any better suggestions :)
