They have nothing to do with phone reception, They are high speed data technologies for GSM networks with EDGE being the slowest and HSDPA the fastest. Also, their availability today are inversly correlated with their speed, with EDGE being pretty broadly available and HSDPA just now being rolled out in the US and available in very few markets. I believe UMTS is pretty broadly available in many non-US markets and a handful of US markets. Much more important for phone reception and coverage in the US is the inclusion of the 800/850 band, which many phones from Europe do not have.
