WiFi / Odyssey problems - HELP PLEASE

Sorry if answers elsewhere but I am new to this forum (and fairly new to Axim x51v). I have not yet beenable to get WiFi connection working and have read a number of instructions to no avail. Help Please. I have Axim x51v with WM5. I often get a notification error popping up:

Cannot execute \Program Files\Funk Software\Odyssey Client\OdClientCE.exe

I have managed to find my home wireless network connection - I set the SSID to visibible. I have entered the correct WEP key but never got connected to internet. Also, never able to find any other wireless connections.

Does anyone have a simple set of instructions? This means including translating Odyssey terminology for the idiot. Or should I ditch trying Odyssey and use Dell WLAN Utility? Or something else??????

Thanks

ditch Odyssey. open odyssey and hit disable and exit from it. If you don't specifically need it it will cause many problems for you. Most people can just use wlan. Try it and if you still can't get it working there is a great tutorial in the sticki at the top of the page. or post bback here and someone will try to help. Welcome to the site!

There were couple of threads here regarding the same problem. You can search the forums. basically odyssey has some bugs and it is trying to load at every soft boot. so you might have several of them running.

Is there any safe way to remove Odyssey from the device then? Yes, I have had multiple notifications - so I assume multiple running at once!

Will try with Dell WLAN.

Cheers

Nope it is hard coded in the ROM. I doubt it is trying to run multiple times but once is enough to cause your problem. Do what i posted in my first reply and you should be fine.

thanks ..... now, I am still having Windows\ODCLient.exe trying toexecute, but it notifies me it cannot. Also, when I switch on I typically hang for a while (many seconds - maybe a minute - but do not know why. I previously had an activesync problem with activesync trying to sync with an exchange server but Dell Support guided me through settting this up to look at Dell as the server then set to manual sync only so it never tries to go there automatically. However that caused the axim to simply hang and not even trun on before I fixed it so don't think it is the same problem. Any help, before I call Dell again?
Cheers.

check in the startup folder on the pda and delete anything in there that looks like it might have to do with Odyssey. that should make it stop and the pda should turn on much faster.

Thanks Big Dave. I have moved odClientCEAutoLaunchSmart, poutlook and SplashV from the startup folder into a folder I created just to move them to (before deleting). Should any of these not be removed? I am left with BTTray and WirelessIcon in the StartUp folder. Should these be in StartUp?
I did a soft reset and on turning on the device is still really slow to get going - ie nothing happening for a long time when I tap the screen. Once it does rev up all is good, but still nto sure what is hanging the starting process when I switch on.

Are you doing a full power off or just the normal tap of the power button? If you are doing a full power off then it does take some time to load everything back to ram when you turn it on.

I was just doing normal tap off. The power button is configured to dim the screen on being held down. For "fun" I have just done a full pwer off and have now reconfigured back to dim the screen on holding power button. On normal power off then back on it is still slow to get going.

Am I just being impatient? My old iPAQ was always fully operational immediately upon power on.

Actually there is a way to remove Odyssey. Search for it on Aximsite or Google.

I took odyssey out of the startup, too, and my axim now starts up slowly from a regular on-off button push.

and i keep getting "cannot connect" balloon popping up even though I have wlan, odyssey, and all the connections set to "off"

help, please

There is a Registry Tweak utility available from the following thread...within the tweak, there is a setting to remove Odyssey:

you really shouldn't have to remove odyssey once you have it disabled and it is permanently in the ROM so it will come back if you have to hard reset it. Have you soft reset since turning it off? also, do you have either wifi or bt turned on? it shouldnt try to connect if they are off unless you have some program that is trying to 'call home' to sync and is connecting on it's own.
