I think what you really need is a repeater.
A good article can be found on

Or products on

or just simply google 802.11 repeaters
But of course its extra hardware which costs extra dosh.
The basic problem you are facing is limited output power of the Axim/Access point and
limited sensitivity of the Axim/Access point.
I would say that changing antenna's may get you a little bit more range at the
cost of directivity and/or a lot of effort. Increasing output power or sensitivity
requires knowledge of the RF system and circuit and is hard to do with the information
provided in the instruction manual.
Just to give you an example, so you put a PA between the antenna and the Axim
output, mmm, what about in receive mode? You would need to put it before the
TX/RX switch and don't forget the beefy power supply you might need to boost
the output power to suitable levels. Putting an LNA (Low noise amplifier) on
the access point or Axim for recieve (be careful in transmit mode as it too may need to go
before the TX/RX switch), great for really low signals but what about when you
move closer, too much gain will cause signal distortion. There are other far more
detailed complications which would limit these additions too.
Unfortunately RF engineers are trying to squeeze every last dB of sensitivity out
of their devices and every last dB of output power. I might be wrong but I don't think
there is an easy quick fix for a range extension, except of course repeaters.
