There are ways to modify the router itself so it gives off a better signal. Some people have also said that cf/sd wifi cards can draw a weak singal better.

I like the idea, but don't know what I'm doing and won't pretend to.

What about a can-tenna for the ax? In my (multiple) disassebly of my ax we've learned that the antenna is a teeny little coax connection. If you were to somehow take this connection and hook it to a cantenna or the like you should be able to get a heck of a lot of strength.

Mmm, not sure you will get what you are looking for. You may get a more
efficient antenna or you may get a more directional antenna, but your
basic problem still lies in your transmit power and your receiver sensitivity.
Why not have a look at router specs and see which has the best sensitivity
specification. It might save you buying a new Axim too ;-)

I have an old portable fm radio where the internal antenna is wired to the headphone slot. So when u plug in headphones you have an instant antenna. And the phones still function.

It just uses the cord of the headphone as an antenna. Most of the walkmens and portable radios have this kind of technology.

If somebody could do this to the axim, run a wire from the little internal antenna to the heaphone slot, you would draw a lot better wifi.

I'm not so sure there is any science behind this statement. The power deliverered into
the antenna would be the same, therefore either the losses in the antenna would
be less (more efficient) or directivity greater (energy focussed in one direction). I
doubt this would be the case for a bit of wire hanging out your ear. I also doubt that
it would increase the reciever sensitivity either, note that the access point will
put out around +20dBm, that is, you will hear it but it probably can't hear you.
Don't forget that your FM radio is operating at approx 100MHz (3m wavelength)
and 802.11b operates at 2.4GHz (125mm wavelength), the antennas will also
be considerably different.

If only antenna theory were so straight forward.

Jason

If only it was that easy.

I have used a CF WiFi adapter with my Axim, but its reception was no better than the built-in WiFi.
It would, however, have the possibility of adding an external antenna without voiding your Axim's warranty.

I think what you really need is a repeater.

A good article can be found on

http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials...le.php/1571601

Or products on

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=267&sec=0

http://www.buffalotech.com/products/...2&categoryid=7

or just simply google 802.11 repeaters

But of course its extra hardware which costs extra dosh.

The basic problem you are facing is limited output power of the Axim/Access point and
limited sensitivity of the Axim/Access point.

I would say that changing antenna's may get you a little bit more range at the
cost of directivity and/or a lot of effort. Increasing output power or sensitivity
requires knowledge of the RF system and circuit and is hard to do with the information
provided in the instruction manual.

Just to give you an example, so you put a PA between the antenna and the Axim
output, mmm, what about in receive mode? You would need to put it before the
TX/RX switch and don't forget the beefy power supply you might need to boost
the output power to suitable levels. Putting an LNA (Low noise amplifier) on
the access point or Axim for recieve (be careful in transmit mode as it too may need to go
before the TX/RX switch), great for really low signals but what about when you
move closer, too much gain will cause signal distortion. There are other far more
detailed complications which would limit these additions too.

Unfortunately RF engineers are trying to squeeze every last dB of sensitivity out
of their devices and every last dB of output power. I might be wrong but I don't think
there is an easy quick fix for a range extension, except of course repeaters.
