Worried Unable to connect wirelessly

I have had my new Axim x51v for a couple of weeks now, and have not been able to connect wirelessly anywhere. I have read through a number of the different threads and attempted any and all troubleshooting suggestions I have found. The WLAN is on, the Oddessy Client is not. When I select "settings" from the WLAN utility page, I am taken to the "Configure Network Adapters" page (in fact, I have never seen the "Configure Wireless Network" page. I have done everything I can possibly think of to get it working with no luck. This is my first PDA, so I am quite a novice.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Also, I am able to use IE when connected to my PC via the cradle.)

Welcome to Aximsite :approve:

You don't say where you are connecting (home network or at other locations) so diagnosing the problem can be difficult. At the bottom of the Today screen, you should see the signal strength indicator (RHS): when you are in range of a wireless network (and the wireless adaptor is on) these bars turn yellow (for a weak signal) or green (for a strong signal). If the bars are cut in half the wireless function is turned off.

If you have a signal, the Axim normally connects to the available networks automatically and provides a message asking where you want the network to connect to (Work or Internet). Providing access is unrestricted (it is not an encrypted network requiring a password) you should be able to connect using PIE.

So, I guess a couple of questions spring to mind:
  1. Do you have any signal?
  2. Do you get a message asking how you want to connect?
  3. Are you connecting to a home wireless network?
  4. Do you have the encryption key for any network that you are trying to connect to?
Let us know the details and I am sure that one of the Wireless Gurus can help you resolve the problem.

You said you have read threads, have you read this one?

It should help you. I would suggest go thru the steps outlined and see if you have done each and if you have the proper settings established and see if that resolves your problem.

In relation to the "Configure Network Adapters" page vs. the "Configure Wireless Network" page, you will only get the configure wireless network page when WiFi is turned on.

Sorry for getting back to this so late...hopefully you are still up and paying some attention:)....and thank you very much for the welcome. To answer your questions:

To Jogga:
1. My signal is non-existent, but the WLAN utillity is turned on b/c the bars are solid white.
2. No, I do not get a message asking me how I want to connect.
3. I am connecting to a home wireless network, and in fact, a list of wireless networks (including my own) IS listed on the "Site" tab in the WLAN utility (status: Scanning network) I've tried to click on my network, double click on it, etc....and nothign happens.
4. Yes, I have the encryption key but I am unable to enter it....even the config tab will not allow me to enter any information.

To rcab:
Yes, i have read through that partcular thread numerous times, trying and retrying any of the trouble-shooting suggetions that made sense.

To ikehiker:
Even with WiFi turned on, I do not get the "Configure Wireless Network" page.

Thank you for helping me out with this....Oh, one more thing...I almost NEVER, EVER see the wireless tower icon at the top of my today screen. Usually I see two arrows going in opposite directions. The only time I have ever seen the tower is when I first turn on my PPC...and only for 1 split second. Then it is back to the double arrows.

I hope this helped.....

It may be an actual physical problem with your Axim and the only option would be to contact Dell for a replacement.

When you do this, they are likely to ask you to do a hard reset so you may want to try this before calling them just to see if some software you've installed or some configuration you've made is causing the problem.

Ugh! Okay...I was hoping you wouldn't say that! Wish me luck! I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks!

I may be missing something above but...could your home network be set to broadcast at 802.11g only or faster if it's a mimo/boosted type? Your Axim only sees signals at the slower 802.11b.

I guess the answer is likely to be that your home network is broadcasting in the b spectrum as well, since your Axim lists the wireless network, but I didn't like to assume.

Cheers

Phil

Check the channel that the router is working on: I suspect that it should be mid-range (although I'm not sure that this would stop you seeing the signal).
