Wireless Access Point Comparision

Hi everyone, i'm goin' wifi and i need help on deciding which AP I should go with...I want to share a dial-up internet connection and network my computer to my ax via PC NIC to HUB to AP to CF Wireless Card. What wireless access points do you recommend and how much do they cost?

Right now i'm looking at the Linksys WAP11 AP. It's basic and it does not have a router (since I do not have a cable/dsl connection). Whadda think? :crooked: :)

If you don't have cable/dsl and IF you don't have more than 1 computer and the Axim to connect, then you only need a NIC in the PC and a CF WiFi in the Axim. This is called "ad-hoc" mode. You don't need a WAP.

I know, but I think I would prefer an WAP on infrastructure mode so i dont have to install a wireless NIC in my desktop. I have enough PCI cards already, being a gamer. Plus i have room for more wireless devices (like my laptop).

OK, I have a D-Link WAP that I have no complaints with. I think they are generally available at the mass marketers for around $50.

I like the WAP11. Just my opinion, I would plan for the future and get the BEFW11S4. More features, broadband capable when you get to that point, good coverage, solid performance, this way you could also get rid of your 'hub' and use the built in switch capabilities.

I've used the Linksys BEFW114 now for over a year. Everything has worked great, rock stable performance. I would recommend for you to buy this and if/when you upgrade to boardband you'll be ready. Just look around for a good sales and you could get it for less than $70.

Checkout this one:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=122640

I use it and it's not too bad with the dell CF wireless card.

Don't buy it off of Belkin's site, though. Too expensive there...

Thanks guys, Spudman I was looking at the BEFW11S4 AP+Switch+Router. So the only thing different then the WAP11 and the BEFW11S4 is that it has a built in router AND Switch AND Access Point? It's weird because the WAP11 is more expensive then the BEFW11S4.

PS Did you guys notice that we all have cartoon characters as avatars except for Jmtyra? lol

I hope I'm not disturbing the looney tunes group ;)

I suspect the prices on WiFi routers have been coming down because many companies are switching to the 802.11g technology. You'd think the same factors would lower the AP prices but I think it has to do with the level of demand (fewer people are going with strictly access points any more).

OK, you can all go back to talking in your high squeaky voices now :)
