DSL and the Axim

Hi there!!

This should be a stupid question. And sure that is has been answered anywhere in this forum although I canīt find it.

Letīs go:

I donīt understand differences between Bluetooth and Wifi. I have a DSL connection to Internet via router 3com 812. I would like to connect my Axim to the internet via this router wireless.

What kind of card should I buy??? Bluetooth card, wifi card.....???
Any adaptor to my existing router???

Thank you very much in advance for your help and best regards from Spain.

Devadip,

Sorry, its late so I'm going to make this post a bit short (although not as short as enobs :)).

Bluetooth (BT) and WiFi are two different wireless standards.

BT is a short-range (~10m) networking standard that is generally used to directly connect two devices. Because it is a short-range standard it is currently being pushed as a way to get your computer wireless, including mouse/keyboard, printer, cameras, etc. It also is used for connecting Cell Phones, PDA's, and Computers to each other and BT devices.
This is probably not what you are looking for.

WiFi (802.11a/b/g) is a long-range solution that would probably best suit your needs. There are a few different standards (a,b,g) right now, but I would suggest b.
There are 2 different modes by which you could get your Ax wireless.

1. Infrastructure, this involves using a Wireless Access Point (WAP) to act as a hub for any wireless devices. You could do this 2 ways. You could replace your existing router with a wireless enabled router. Or you could add an access point (AP) behind your current router.

Required would be a WAP (router or AP) and a WiFi CompactFlash card for your Axim.

2. Ad-Hoc. This would involve directly connecting your PC and your Axim to each other and sharing your PC's current internet with the Axim. Required woul d be a WiFi point for your PC (either PCI or USB) and a WiFi CompactFlash card for your Axim.

I would like to point you to this tutorial by Ikehiker about WiFi and setting up a WiFi network. Any comments or questions about the tutorial would be greatly appreciated in this thread.

Thank you very much for your help.

I have learn a lot and I will read the tutorial to try to become an expert ;-)

One more question after reading your post is:

What mode do you recommend if I not only want to connect to internet but to share all the files I have in my PC (including the option to print a document in my printer)?

And, Is it necessary to buy an AP if I use the Ad-Hoc mode? Or will just be fine to use a PCI or USB WIFI point in my PC.

Thanks again for your time and your kind help

You could do either Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure since you only have (2) devices that will be connecting. Once you get to more than (2), then Infrastructure is recommended.

For Ad-Hoc, an adapter (USB or PCI) would be adequate - you do not need an access point. This is exactly what I currently have set up.

The range would depend on your equipment (e.g., wifi card , etc.) and if there are any major obstacles in the way (i.e., you get better range if your router is located up high). I currently have a linksys CF card and a netgear router and I can use my Ax all over the house and outside in the backyard as well. It doesn't go beyond the property line though, and my place is not big.
