Blue Tooth & Verizon Wireless

Hello There,

I've got an Axim X51 which I love. It works great with my wifi at home and other places too. Currently, I have an old school Verizon cell phone. I was thinking of upgradingt o a BlueTooth model. My Axim is BlueTooth ready. I was wondering if anyone knew if I connect my Axim to get email/web via a BlueTooth phone, will I get charged for a data connection from my provider (Verizon) or will it just count as air time? I called Verizon and the person I spoke with didn't have an answer.

Thanks so much!

I'm curious about this too if anyone has any input. I'm thinking more of pairing the two devices and then using the axim to send and recieve SMS text messages.

I first tried this about a year ago with a razr. I was told over the phone that tethering the two, a razr and an x50v, would work. Well, it didn't and at the time verizon crippled this type of tethering. You cold only tether a headset. The axim would recognize the phone, but the dial-up option was not available.

So I did some research and found Howardforums.com Good site, but from what was said there, it did not seem like a good idea to do this. It involved some hacking of the phone and other things that could void the warranty. The razr was a work phone and I did not want to get into trouble.

So, my quest ended there. From what I was last told at one of the verizonstores, was that they do offer a way to do this now with the razr using a mobile office kit. That is where I am now.

And will stay there for the time being. I lost my axim and now use a 700w and like it for the email, but any other "fun" stuff-music, multimedia, etc. I just figure that I can live without it.

Sorry for being so long, but simply put, try it out and if it does not work, then send it back within the 15 days, if not you are stuck.
Good luck.

Verizon has changed something on their network that stopped broadband access through their EVDO. Now I can only use it with my laptop but at 1x speed (128k modem speed). The trick is to make the connect unsecure or unencrypted in order for it to work and it uses your phone minutes each time you connect.

I've done it woth a Samsung i730 running WM2003 SE. There's this program called PATH that let's you turn it into a bluetooth modem. You need to already have a data account with Verizon Wireless though. Minutes are only for phone calls with Verizon.

Must still work. I tried it and was able to connect just now. Here's how:

1. Pair the Axim with your cell phone
2. Tap Start-Settings-Connections Tab-Connections
3. Under "My ISP" tap "Add a new modem connection"
4. Enter a name for the connection--Verizon, or whatever
5. Under "Select a modem:", choose "Bluetooth"
6. Tap "Next"
7. In the list, choose your cell phone and tap to highlight it
8. Tap "Next"
9. Enter #777 as the number to dial and tap "Next"
10. As user name, enter yourcellphonenumber@vzw3g.com, i.e. 1234567890@vzw3g.com
11. For pasword, enter vzw. Leave domain blank
12. Tap "Finish". Now you are back on the "Connections" page
13. Tap "Manage existing connections"
(If you want to watch the progress of the connection attempt, then open your phone so that you can see the screen)
14. Tap and hold on the name of the connection you just set up
15. In the context menu, tap "Connect"
16. Cross your fingers, open your browser, and surf!
17. I hear that this goes against your minutes and there is no other charge, but don't blame me if they charge you $50.00 per minute. :-)

If I have listed the steps correctly, and if you have followed them correctly, then you will (hopefully) connect.

When I connected, I did not get any overt indication on the PDA that I was connected, but I was able to see on the phone screen that a connection had been made. I'm not exactly sure how you are supposed to disconnect. I just did it by turning Bluetooth off.

Good luck!

This is apparently an unpublicized "back door" kind of thing, and, if you want to keep on being able to do it, I would not call Verizon and ask them how. I really don't know much about it, so Google your questions, and you should find any answers you may need about the process.

I have been doing it for 18 months. It would not work until I bought their data plan and got broadband speed. No hacking or anything was needed other than the above steps. Without data plan it would just connect and drop the call saying unauthorized. I did it with LG 9800 and now do it with a Treo 700P (the 700W will NOT work)

JFM's post (above) did not work for me so I set out on a quest to find out why.
After many, many hours I pieced together a method (from several forums, including this one) that worked for my Axim x51v and my Verizon Razr V3m.

I posted the details here if you want to check them out: http://www.hacktherazr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3584

This method is not for the faint of heart, as it requires some know-how on editing your phone (which may trash it if you are careless).
Also, I'm guessing this will work with other Verizon phones (since they use the same firmware), but I don't know - so post back and let me know if it does.

hi, just wanted to add some insight here. i have axim x51v,A12 rom, w/latest widcomm bt stack version 5 and a motorola V710 cellphone w/bluetooth. i have it paired up to my axim as a dial-up modem, and it works great. it's not slow nor is it broadband speeds; but it's better than nothing. i have the phone dial into a local isp account and all it does is uses my minutes from my existing family shared plan. nites and weekends don't go against my plan at all, those are free. i have nevergone over my minutes, but it's just like making a call to another phone, without needing to buy any special data plan. i have been using my phone as a modem for the last two years with my laptop and for the last 8 months with my axim.i hope this has helped answer some questions between data usage and minutes usage.

By the way i too use verizon wireless as my cellphone carrier.

I didn't mention, that before I coughed up for the data plan, I was able to connect via BT with Verizon and dial an ISP, that was using minutes, which were free on nights and weekends, but I wanted the faster speed and used it a lot more than night and weekends, so the data plan was worthwhile. It is actually less than a broadband card for my laptop, works just as fast, and runs the axim, too.

Does anyone know to do this with Cingular? What would the number to dial and user name be. Make that AT&T.
