I always use total commander CE from www.ghisler.com to browse files on the PDA... You can then just select the mp3 from the network (in my case my music server), and it will start playing in GSplayer.

BTW is there any way to uninstall that extremely useless windows media player to save some memory?

It would still be extemely handy to be able to select the file from directly within the application. That gives you the option of creating playlists and / or opening a file in an application that may not be the default associated with that file type.
Anyway, I fell asleep last night listening to an Audio Book on my Axim that was streaming from my server. I'm happy. :)
