Home Internet Sharing Network

Hi all,
I have spent 2 days trying to get this problem sorted out, if someone can help I would REALLY appreciate it. (i tried the moderators howto but the link was broken?)
I bought an Axim 400mhz running PPC2003, with truemobile1180 CF card, then went out and bought a CNET USB Wifi adaptor for my PC, with a view to getting online throughout the house on my axim.
I created a new wireless connection on the axim (called home), which the PC detected and connected to.
The Axim and the PC now say that 'home' is connected.
When I load IE on the axim and try to go to a page it says 'the page you are looking for cannot be found'
i am running winxp pro on the pc, and i have been through all the settings to make sure internet sharing is on.

can someone please help?

thanks!

So you enabled ICS on the interface FACING THE INTERNET, not on the USB right?

For each card
What IP Addresses are assigned?
WEP?
What channels?
SSIDs?
Inf or Adhoc?
Under Connection Settings on the PPC what do you have?

ok, first read the manual with the wireless products. It will give you some instruction on what SSID, Channel, AdHoc/Infrastructure are etc. Then familiarise yourself with the drivers and look for these items in your driver config.

It's not rocket science, but it won't "fall together" either....

the manuals for the truemobile card and the usb adaptor are about as useful as a hole in the head.
I assume its an adhoc connection cause its only peer to peer.
I created the SSID on the axim calling it 'home', and the PC recognises it and says its connected.
whats the channel thing about?

you asume it's adhoc but you have to configure it that way too.

If you've enabled ICS on the interface facing the Internet, then the LAN interface should becomes a DHCP server and have the IP 192.168.0.1

Your Wifi NIC on your axim should then be set for DHCP.

The channels are radio channels between 1-11. Make sure they match.

Adhoc should be set on both.

Same SSID on both.

Set your Connections settings to work, work, work (for now)

That's about it.

So go and confirm the settings on all the adaptors, also from the PC run an IPCONFIG and see what IP addresses are assigned.

This is a tool for your Axim. You can use it to verify that you are getting an IP assigned by the PC (ICS).

Just copy the cab to your PPC via AS and then execute it from explorer on the PPC.

thanks howard,
i ran that prog you linked to, it lists 2 network adaptors (the wifi and the usb cable/cradle), the wifi says its DHCP, it gives the ip address, the gateway is left blank, gives the DHCP server, DNS and WINS are left blank, and it gives a MAC address too.

this is looking to be way more complicated that i expected.
everything is set to 'work', do I also need to create a connection under settings-connections-connections and if so what type should it be set to?

i have also pinged the axim from the computer aand it came back fine.

thanks,

thomas

I would think you would want the gateway set to the PC's address since the PC is the "gateway" to the internet. Just my thoughts

Since the ICS on the PC should be running DHCP the Axim should be set to Obtain an IP Address automatically.

What address is there now?

No need to set the gateway, set by DHCP.

I think I know what you are trying to do. Here is how you should set up your network.

On the WINXP machine:
-Make sure the USB adapter is in AD-HOC mode
-Go in you Connections window under WinXP
-Go to the properties of your dial up connection
-Go try to find the tab (either 'sharing' or 'advance') as long as it has something to do about sharing your internet connection.
-Activate the internet sharing.
-I dunno if you have to restart on not if it ask restart.
-I think it will assign a 192.168.0.1 address to the USB WLAN adapter or the NIC in your computer.

On the Axim:
-Make sure the Truemobile WLAN cf is in AD-HOC mode.
-The XP machine should assign an ip address to your cf, but if it doesn't you can assign an ip address of 192.168.0.x (x=any number up to 254 except 1), a gateway of 192.168.0.1 and DNS from your ISP. To find out your DNS numbers fromn your ISP try going to the command prompt and type "ipconfig /all," and find the DNS entries for your dial up modem and use those as your DNS.

I hope that works. It's kinda vague, but if you any further questions please let me know.

^ What he said is pretty damn close.

But make sure you use DHCP on your Axim to avoid having to screw around with DNS servers. Also ensure that the SSID matches and the channels match.
