I'm confused about routers, and PCI adapters

sorry for the ignorance of this, but i thought in order to set up a wireless internet connection for my axim in my home all i needed was a wireless router and a compactflash lan card. i need a one of those USB adapters too? so i have to have my axim connected to my laptop in reality, is this correct?

i'm looking for the cheapest way to set this up in my home, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're on a broadband net connection (either cable or dsl) then yes, a router and a compact flash wifi card will do the job just fine. your modem (dsl or cable modem) goes to the router, router broadcasts to the axim (and any other pc hooked up to it either wirelessly or with ethernet cable)

You need a wireless CF card for your Axim.

You also need another device to talk to the Axim which can be a wireless access point, a wireless router, or a wireless card for another computer. To share an internet connection with the Axim and other computers you probably want to get a wireless router, then it will communicate with the Axim wirelessly and with your other computers through cables.

There is no need for any USB hardware, except for the case where your cable modem connects directly to your computer through USB which my cable modem is capable of doing.

For a better answer, please tell us what you currently have and we can tell you what you need to add for the Axim.

i'm starting to understand alittle better now. i figured out what a usb network adapter is.

first things first, i need a good priced compactflash card. can anyone reccomend the best priced ones?

i have a cable setup at home. since the price of the usb adapters, and the wireless routers are aproaching the same price, i would think i would want a router to use my laptop and my axim both wirelessly.

thanks for the help

Yes, there are wireless routers that have ports where you can plug in cables from other computers.

compusa has a good deal for a d-link CF card for $30.00 after mail in rebate. The online store is sold out, but you might be able to find a store near you that has them in stock. I just bought one a few days ago, and I'm loving it. Just check their website:

Watch out because there are wireless access points that DO NOT have router capability builtin, do not have the ability to share an internet connection, and do not have the ability to plug in multiple "wired" computers. The wireless access points are not significantly less expensive, they are just made for a different purpose.

poppajon,

I think all of the currently sold wireless routers come with 4-LAN ports that can be used with ethernet patch cables to attach to 'wired' equipment. Note that wireless and router are both important in this name - you don't want a standard ethernet router and as v8sho mentioned, you want a router, not an access point. A few of the older WiFi routers only had a single LAN port.

FYI, I have a "Wireless FAQ" posted here (and linked from the second thread in this forum) which may answer any more questions you may have. When you are ready to set it up, look at the "WiFi How-To" linked from the third thread. I think it may help, too.

Netgear (mr814) also has a good deal at:

www.buy.com

38.99 (mail in rebate) same as amazon but the shipping with buy.com rules

just do a serach for mr814 and it will take you right to the product.

I bought this last Thursday and chose regualr ground shipping and it was at my door the next day. Now I'm just waiting for my card. I'm a little (okay, extremely) nervous about setting this up as I have zero clue when it comes to stuff like this.
In the meantime, I'm going to check out ikehiker's info on this....he is just one wonderful, amazing, sweet, guy for putting this all together. I know it's going to save my (ya know) when the time comes to set this all up.

:)

I is a really easy Janine. Mr Ikehiker's FAQ is completely thorough. You will enjoy surfing the net while sitting up in bed, or lazing on the couch. What card did you go with?

well, against my better judgement, I went with a Netgear MA701...I only say that because drivers are not yet available for 2003 on this card. But, I'm not so certain that when 2003 does become available for the Axim that I'm going to upgrade. I was thinking about waiting until later in the year when hopefully other Axim models become available and then looking into those.

I've read quite a few threads on cf cards and still have time to change my mind as the Netgear MA701 is on backorder (still have time to cancel the order). From lack of being unable to make a decision, I went the the Netgear card. If you have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

THANKS!!!
