Who is the OEM for True Mobile 1180?
My boss asked me to find out who actually makes the True Mobile 1180 wireless (802.11b) CF adapter for Dell.
He likes it so much he would like to get other products from the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).
Thanks.

I don't have mine here to do a search but you can go to www.fcc.gov and do a search on the FCC ID number ..

OEM
I'm looking at the press releases and product info on Orinoco's web site.
So far there is no mention of them making a CF wireless for Dell.
As a matter of fact they don't even show a CF wireless under their own name.
Am starting to wonder...
Yes I know I can search on the FCC site but I don't have my boss' unit on hand.

Well an OEM wouldn't really let you know. I wish I had thought of the FCC site. Good call Planet-Ed!

Yea I've used the FCC site to look it up before but I can't remember who it was ...
Unfortunately my son has the Dell WIFI card with him down in Arizona while he's visiting his mom and won't be back until the 9th or I would have looked it up for you ..

Based on the FCC ID (IXMCF114100) on my TM1180, the applicant is Universal Scientific Industrial Co Ltd out of Taiwan.

I've been told Orinoco too. My guess would be orinoco gets them from these guys and then hands them over to Dell. Ah the joys of mass asian production :) Seen it often.

Agere made the driver
I opened the Dell driver program and selected "Tools" -> "Version Info". The resulting screen claims that the manufacturer is "Agere Systems". It isn't clear from the screen whether they meant the manufacturer of the driver or the card. I am guessing that Agere manufactured the card.

In June of 2003, Proxim purchased the Orinoco Product Line from Agere Systems for roughly $65 million.

I have been fully happy with all products I've owned using their chipsets, I'll be locating one of these cards now.

Here is a link to another thread here where someone said it was made by Agere/Orinoco.

It's definitely an Orinoco card. The driver is an Orinoco driver. Orinoco started out as AT&T, then spun off as Lucent, then sold to Agere then to Proxim.
I have an Orinoco Gold card and the driver even uses some of the same graphics. (Hmmm.. I should try the 1180 in my laptop and see if the Orinoco driver works with it... :)
