Wireless for the beginner

Need a little help here.

I am interested in wireless connectivity to the internet with my Axim. That's it. I don't need a network set up for the whole office, or anything crazy...Just me and my Axim, cruising the net from wherever.

Is that possible, and what do I need to get? A modem and internet service?

Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks

You've got two basic options with some sub categories-
1) if you have a cellular service that has data capabilities, you can
a) use IR if your phone has this capability;
b) buy a Bluetooth CF card if your phone is BT capable;
c) get a cell-2-axim cable from a place like gomadic.com
(these first three options also will allow you to use basic, non-data bandwidth to connect to a dial-up ISP);
d) buy a GPRS CF card if your cell service has this capability;
or
2) Get a CF WiFi card and use public hotspots (many of which charge by the hour or through a monthly/yearly subscription)

So, if you get a CF WiFi card, that's all you need? You don't need any other kind of hardware, like, a wireless modem from a PC or something? Sorry, I'm new to this wireless stuff too. Thanks for any info.

It depends.. Using a public hotspot then no. Using it at home then you will need more infrastructure. Either an AP, AP/Router or another NIC and use a PC as a gateway. All depends what you want to do.

Just to be sure...

I can get a GPRS CF card, and buy appropriate service from Sprint, ATT, or someone... and then I am good to go?

Jake --

Are you the same Jake Grafton who flew Intruders in Nam?

But yes, you're good to go...as long as your bank account holds out.

Ha ha! I would be the A-6 aviator...well, in my own mind. Read many of the books, and pilfered the name.
