axim wireless questions -- i'm new; sorry to repeat common questions

I have a wireless network at home, and I'll want to use the wireless network at college. I have an X5 using the A02 ROM. I'm looking at three different CF wireless cards: the linksys wm12 card, the TM dell card, and the socket card. I don't really mind paying for the socket card if it truly is the best card available. Which one is the best? Which has the best range, which is the easies to uses, etc? I also had a quesoitns about Pocket 2003. I heard it's more oriented for wireless, but I've heard about lots of glitches. Is it worth upgrading that at this point if I want to set the axim up on a wireless LAN? Can i even upgrade if i only have the a02 rom? thanks a ton.

The Socket is truly the best card when all features are considered. I think a lot of people have used the linksys card - generally with good success. On the other hand, a lot of people have reported problems with the range on the Dell card (and, if this thread goes the way of previous ones, a few people will say it works great for them. I personally don't think it's worth taking the chance.) AFAIK, Linksys hasn't come out with drivers for WM03 yet but they say they are in the works.

You can upgrade from A02 if you buy the upgrade disk from Dell. I believe it's back on hold as they do some tweaking to fix problems with the installation on some units. In the meanwhile, I have a WiFi How-to linked from the second thread in the WiFi forum which should help you set WiFi up with PPC02.

As a Linksys WCF12 user I second Ike's opinion that the socket is better.

The Linksys is good, but they're support for WM2003 is non-existent. It seems that everyone knew about wm2003 APART from Linksys..

It can be made to work of course.

Any, I AM happy with the WCF12 but little doubt that the Socket is a better card.

One more feature is power consumption. The socket is a fair way better there too. May or may not be a big deal, depends how far feom power you tend to be and whether you have the bigger battery or not....

Personally it wasn't worth the extra cash to me.

I have an Ax performance and have specifically tagged on a wireless segement to my network for its use.

I bought a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Router and the Dlink DCF-660W for the Axim because I'd heard it has good overall performance and, the deciding factor, the card works with PPC2003 using the PPC2002 drivers. The bonus was that it also happens to be a good wardriving/walking/cycling etc. card too. :D

Altogether I'm really happy with the Dlink card, the range is fine and it works well. I live in an oldish house with walls made of brick and stone and can still get a solid reception two floors down (directly down).

The facts:

The Socket card seem to be good, really good BUT they're damned expensive. I got my the Linksys Router AND Dlink DCF-660W for the price I would have paid just for the Socket card. Socket also already have Windows Mobile 2003 drivers out.

The Dlink card was cheapish, does its job well, the PPC 2002 drivers work just fine on it and the drivers are very functional. It is relatively power hungry though.

There's a saying: "Swings and roundabout's"

Ok, thanks for your help. I know this topic isn't meant for the wireless forum, but I just want to clarify one thing about pocket 2003 before pursuing a wireless card. Is the upgrade worth it if I'm going to use wireless? THanks again.

I'm afraid I can't really compare since I've only ever really used wireless on a PPC 2003.
I had a very short spell with a 2002 device although it didn't have wireless, the 2003 device seems be slightly easier to use and more funtional.

Once the manufacturers start releasing drivers that support PPC2003 then I'd suggest going with PPC 2003. My only quibble with my Dlink is that I can't "turn it off". The functionality to do that is included in PPC2003, we just have to see if it's implemented when the drivers start coming out.
