I have a G router that we use for vonage and I have been using for my ax. I can't get my ipaq to connect and according to HP it's because I have a G router and the ipaq uses a B or mixed. Is there anyway around this using my router?
Is your Axim one with built in WiFi? If so, it is also 'B' so if your router works with it, it is already set to mixed mode.

Any error messages?
One thing that tripped my up was a dearth of available IP addresses: my router's IP range was not wide enough to cater for all of the devices that I wanted to hang off of it
I confess though, I had no trouble connecting the hx2790 to my 3COM
In addition to having enough IPs available, make sure the iPaq's MAC address is included in the router settings if you have MAC filtering enabled.
You might also change the router's setting to broadcast the SSID if it is not already.
Look at the Check these first: section of the WiFi Guide Troubleshooting for more possible solutions.

I will have to check into the IP's. The only things I have hooked to it (not all at the same time) are:
vonage phone
desktop
laptop
axim
The SSID is broadcasting and the mac filtering is disabled.
The network mode is set to "mixed"
I will look into the wifi guide and poke around, but is it possible it won't work at all with my router since the iPaqs will only work with a B router and mine is a G?

Sorry Wendy, I'm not an expert but, some routers seem to restrict IP addressess (for security) and make the first associated device static (retain the address) rather than dynamic (release the address). You should be able to increase the IP address range without difficulty (from the router's control panel).
One other thing to look at is the Channel that the router broadcasts on: mine seems to operate best mid range (9, if memory serves), you may want to play around to find the optimum setting.
Mixed mode should allow various client devices to connect. I've used my X51v, SCH-i760, laptop, two PCs with a Wireless G and Wireless N router. What kind of encryption are you using? I had to knock my Wireless N router down to WPA encryption because the X51v didn't support WPA2. But it seems that shouldn't be the problem I guess if your Axim (820.11b) connects but your Ipaq (also 802.11b) doesn't.

This is unlikely. As I mentioned, your Axim is also 'B-only' and if it is working with the router, the iPaq should also.

Right now I'm using WPA-Preshared Key with
TKIP WPA algorithms. I guess my next step will be to turn off the security on the router and give that a try.
but it's located in the basement so I have to trek down there and figure this out
Depending on the basement, that sounds like a scary proposition!

It's a finished basement, but having to shlep the laptop down...along with being 7 months pregnant....let's just say I'm not to coordinated on the stairs these days

Fortunately our wifi router/modem combo is in the next room. My wife would be making ME go up and down those stairs since she's 7 months along too!
On reflection I recall having a fair amount of trouble getting my X51v to connect to my old Netgear G router, but not too much trouble at all with my Linksys Wireless N device.

Thanks all for your help! I am finally connected :)
Here's what I had to do. I had to disable the security on the router, then enable MAC filtering. Then I turned on all wireless devices and clicked "select MAC address from networked computers" Out of the four wireless devices I had on, it only detected two, so I had to manually input the other two. The I turned back on the security and viola, I'm online
