Eureka! Sort of...
To explain:
I have a dialup ISP for when I travel. Therefore, under Settings-Connections, Advanced tab, Select Networks I had "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using" set to "My ISP". However, with that setting when you select "Set up my proxy server" you must select both "this network connects to the internet" and "this network uses a proxy server". If you uncheck the proxy server setting it also unchecks the top setting as well.
This is maddening. There is no help at all for this, and in fact the help file mentions that you must select a proxy server in order to use the "work" connection in order to browse or e-mail.
Now, of course, I must remember to change that setting back to "My ISP" the next time that I need to use dialup.
I still say this is very kludgy, and unnecessarily so. I still do not understand why there are "work" and "the internet" choices. And if I am confused, imagine the poor new user...
