Exclamation Problem syncing WM 2003 using Wi-Fi -- A solution that worked for me.

I have found a solution that may work for anyone who is using Norton Internet Security and is having a problem synchronizing their Axim X5 running WM-2003 using Wi-Fi.... The problem lies with Norton Internet Security and I have found a SIMPLE solution to the problem.

“I was frustrated and did everything recommended in the other post(s) on this topic and nothing worked. While playing around I disabled NIS and tried to synchronize… My Axim synchronized perfectly using Wi-Fi under the normal partnership... Not as GUEST... As it was doing before. After I enabled NIS again and tried to synchronize… Nothing… So I went in and examined the settings a little closer and here is what I found that works.”

Here is what I did:

1. Open NIS.
2. Select Personal Firewall.
3. Click the “configure” button to the right.
4. Select the “Home Networking” tab.
5. Click the “Wizard Button” then “Next”

NIS should find your Network Adapter and will allow other computers on that adapter to have access to each other.

PROBLEM SOLVED :D (for me at least)….

I hope this works for you!!

A couple of things to note:

I am not a network engineer (i.e. I do not know how secure this is).

I did not have to open any additional “ports” (as stated in previous posts).

I did not have to install the Pocket Host program (as stated in previous posts).

Try it and let me know.

I'm glad you found your solution. I who am a relative PDA newbie as it displays in my post count mn dismayed at the response some give to USE THE SEARCH FEATURE.

I tried it on more than one occasion and spent a whole lot of time reading entertaining posts but nothing that answered my question.

CaminDFW,

Thanks for the post. I hope you don't mind but I've added your instructions to the WiFi How-to.

CaminDFW,

Just want to say thanks for putting this info up for everyone - it solved 99% of my problem and now I am able to WiFi Sync once again after upgrading to PPC2003 (took care of that damn "Guest" problem!) :D

I followed your step by step process, as I too have Norton Internet Security (NIS) installed on my PC.

However, I was still not able to WiFi Sync. Then I re-read your post, and the statement "I did not have to install the Pocket Host program" made me start to think. I had Pocket Hosts installed, but was still not able to wirelessly sync - still got that "guest" log on in Active Sync on my PC (my PDA's sync would just hang and say connecting with no action). Perhaps Pocket Hosts was causing the conflict, as it seemed to be one possible difference between you being able to WiFi Sync and I still could not???

So I went to Pocket Hosts and removed my Host Name/IP address entry. Still did not work. Then I did a soft reset, and then I was able to WiFi Sync! Cool!

To test my theory, I entered my PC info into Pocket Hosts again, tried to WiFi Sync, and got the Guest log on.

Pocket Hosts is a great program and was the only way I was able to WiFi Sync before I upgraded to PPC03, but seems as though it may be causing a conflict for those of us running PPC03 on a PC using Norton Internet Security?

If someone else can test the above out, I would appreciate it.

Again, I would follow CaminDFW's step by step instructions (1st post in this thread), but if that is still not working for you, and you have Pocket Hosts on your Axim:
1) Go to Pocket Hosts, write down your Host Name/IP address info (in case you need to re-enter it later on)
2) Remove your Host Name/IP address entry
3) Do a soft reset
4) Try to WiFi sync. It should show the correct name of your Axim PDA (not "guest") and allow you to WiFi Sync

Aero,

Thanks for the add-on to my solution. While I agree that Pocket Hosts is a "good" program, it is not really a necessity for the casual home Wi-Fi user (the only reason I installed it was that it was mentioned in other posts as a possible fix).

I know that I have already said this but; we are a community here and a community should try to share as much information as it possibly can so that it can flourish and grow.

Pocket Host

Thanks for the suggestion on Pocket Host. I was up and syncing with seconds after getting it installed. It was the last step in a frustrating process. Thanks for the help!!

Aero,

I am having the same problem you were having. However, I don't have Norton Internet Security. I do think your suggestion about PocketHost being the problem will help though. I'll try it when I get home and let everyone know how it turns out.

Well, it turns out that I just needed to do a soft reset. Apparently I didn't do one after I installed PocketHost. Everything is working fine now.
