No WiFi with WEP using Dell CF-WLAN-card

Hi!

With my (used) Axim I got a Dell TrueMobile WLAN-card (if I had had to choose one I would have taken another one but as I got them bundles very cheap - why not). Using it without WEP works without any problem, excellent connection etc.

Now I want it to use it on the campus where they use a 64-bit-WEP-key. The Axim can see the network and up to four APs without any problem. So I entered the network name and the 10-digit-hex-key selecting "use hexadecimal". Problem is: now the Axim keeps searching the net but never finds it and that does look to me as it's a problem with the WEP-encryption. Another thing that seems a bit strange is that wehen I go back to the WEP-section in the settings-dialog it always changes back to "alphanumeric" no matter what I do. So when I change it back to hex, click on "ok" and go back it's again "alphanumeric".

So do you have any suggestions? Is there any possibility to enter the key manually somewhere in the registry or in a configuration file (I'm running PPC 2002)?

Thanks in advance,

David

On my home net I had a similar problem. It appears that Different makers of Wifi Epuipment use a different Passphrase encription Program. The Alphanumerics use see ARE the Hex Key. You will need to find someone who is already connected and write down the Key (alphanumerics) and enter THAT instead of the Passphrase. Also, your Ax will remember the Key even after changing to another network and turning encription off.

Pretty cool!

Thanks, MyUncle!

I'm not completely shure wheter I understand your answer. So let's say I got 0123456abc as the 64-bit-WEP-key which would be a proper hexadecimal number. I enter this number as key no. 1 and check "use hexadecimal" and hit ok. When I go back to the dialog 1. "use alphanumeric" is checked and 2. I only see a lot of stars instead of the passphrase so I can't determine whether it has changed or not.

So what should I write down now and how (where) do I find this other passphrase? Do you mean I should try to get out the key of a already working connection (what could it look like, if it's not our example 0123456abc?) and enter it as the a alphanumeric passphrase?

Another thing: I was browsing the registry and found two "directories" with some dwords etc. where the profile data seem to be stored. At the moment I have two of them (profiles). Both of them have a key called "Encryption" and they both have the same (encrypted, as I assume) value, although one of them doesn't even use encryption. Strange, isn't it?

I use 128bit WEP at home which is generated by a passphrase. I used my Laptop to help me out. When I entered my passphrase on the Laptop I also had to select "Generate" which then listed the Hex Key (Alphanumerics) I then wrote this 26 digit number down and entered that in my Ax instead of the passphrase. It wroked after that. FYI I have a Belkin PC card in my laptop and a Belkin Router/AP. I have the linksys CF card in my Ax.

Later, on either my Laptop or my Ax all I see are the "********"

Find someone on campus with a laptop and see if they can help you with the keys for 64 bit WEP. on my laptop one passphrase will generate all 4 keys. you can only see/read them when you select "Generate". Write those down and enter them manually as alphanumerics. No passphrase needed this way.

One more thing. Many drivers will let you store multiple WEP keys and select which one you use. So you could have 4 different keys configured and tell it to use 1,2,3 or 4. So if you are entering the correct key in number 2 and telling it to use number 1 it won't work.
