No E-Mail and Internet, BUT Everything else works with Wireless!

Greetings,

My PC runs XP Pro, and I have a Netgear 614 access point and MA701 wireless card.

Internet access works fine through the USB cradle.

I can map to the PC, Avantgo works, sychronisation works, DHCP works, Encryption works, ping works between PC, AXIM and router...

All Axim settings are to "WORK". ActiveSync has been tried with WORK and INTERNET to no avail!

Internet error "Page Cannot Found". Internet ping times out.

E-mail doesn't find server.

I don't really want to set up internet sharing on the PC, although that did work, as dial up costs are high and it is too easy to leave it on by mistake - (and it tried to dial out even though I just wanted to connect to the PC)

I always say there MUST be a way, but I can't find it..... HELP

Are you saying you have the WinXP machine with dial-up, an access point connected to it and the Axim connected by the CF card but no router/broadband? If this is the case, the Axim has no access to the internet or email in this situation without having ICS enabled.

Hi Ike,

Yes, that's it in a nutshell. However, it DOES work with the USB cradle.

I guess I could live with ICS, but how can I stop it trying to dial everytime I log onto the PC for Hot Syncing or to access files???

Thanks
John

The cradle doesn't create the same type of connection as the WiFi does. My guess would be either you have an email service setup in your inbox that is set to receive email from your ISP when it detects a network connection or, you have Avantgo set to automatically download updates when it detects a connection. Either of these would have your Axim requesting the PC to make the connection.

I haven't worked with ICS but have you looked through it's settings? I imagine there also may be a setting in it that allows connected devices to request the ISP connection.

Change the settings from "Work" to "The Internet" and it should work fine. In my experience you must have a proxy server on your network in order for "Work" to connect to the internet.

Hi from Germany:

I have the same Problem with :

- Axim 5
- Truemobil 1180
- Accesspoint on PC
- Proxy on PC (www.janaserver.de)

Internet access, inbox email account, ftp and Msn Messenger works fine through the USB cradle,

but with WiFi only internet ,Msn Messenger and ActiveSync
works fine. No Inbox and no Ftp.
i tried for 1 week to solve the problem (static IP, dynamic IP, DhCP, no DHCP, settings from "Work" to "The Internet" and return
) telephoned to dell support.

Has anybody an solution?

set everything to work. Creat a "work" network and state that it connects directly to the internet w/o a proxy.

This did the trick for me.

It sounds like your Axim isn't recognizing your PC as the partner you set up via the cable. Did you change the Axim's name from the default (Pocket_PC, I think)? M$ networks often have problems with devices with unusual characters (such as the underscore in the default name).

I'd also suggest PocketHosts which will associate your PC's name with the IP but some people have had problems with it in WM03. There is also a program I use called IP Manager from Kelbran, it does the same thing as PockeHosts (and more) and they have a version for WM03 but it's payware ($15).

Also, you should check to see that Netbios is set up and associated with TCP/IP on the PC.

You probably already thought of this, but I had this error when I was playing with my access point. I had forgotten to set the gateway on the wireless point, so yes you get file transfer, but no, to internet access. Might be that?
