WiFi connects, but indicator stays amber

Hello. I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere - I've been searching, but can not find an answer to this yet. My problem is this. I have an Ipaq 4700 which is set up to connect to an SSID that uses WEP. All of the settings seem to be correct, and the Wireles Manager WILL connect to the SSID and give me access. The taskbar connection shows that I am connected. however, the WiFi icon never changes from amber to green - it just stays amber. This USED to work just fine - it has only started doing this in the last couple of weeks. It doesn't hinder me functionally because the 4700 DOES connect - but the icon stays amber. I have performed hard resets to no avail. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Greetings mpardue! Welcome to the MobilitySite forums!

It sounds like you are not actually connecting to the Access Point long enough to pull down a DHCP IP Address. Typically, you can connect to the AP and your device will state you are connected. This is a true but misleading statement. You can be connected but not have an IP Assignment. Without a DHCP IP Address assignment, you will not be able to access the internet or do anything useful.

My guess is that the use of WEP is likely interferring with your ability to connect properly to this AP. Try disabling WEP to see if the trouble goes away.

If it does, then we can attack the problem from there...

Nope. When I said it connects, I meant that it connects and allows me access to the internet. I can surf, check email, Activesync OTA: functionally I 'm not hindered. It's just that the icon never changes to green. This also happens whenever I'm using any public access point without WEP.

Hmm... Then it could be that the actual green LED is burned-out...

No - it's not an LED. It's the standard icon in the Windows Mobile 2003SE Wireless Manager. It looks like a round button about 1/2 inch in diameter.

Have you updated your Wireless Driver or firmware? If not, this may resolve the problem.

Alternately, if you have a good backup program that you place a lot of confidence in, I would consider backing-up your system, then performing a Hard Reset to confirm that the problem isn't being caused by software issues.

If the problem went away, it was likely a software or driver problem.
If the problem continues after a Hard Reset, then it's most likely a BIOS or Hardware problem...

Sorry, just noticed that you had already performed a hard reset with no change, so it's either a hardware problem, or an issue in the BIOS.

If you try downloading the most recent BIOS version and install it on top of what-ever you currently have, it may resolve the problem...
