I don't see why it would not work. Where was the problem exactly? Did they not associate? Or they associated but you could not transfer data?
The PPC is not a server when it comes out of the box. I would expect that you should be able to configure them both for adhoc and then ping each other using something like vxUtil.
What settings did you use?

I don't see any reason why it would not work. But I know you're not a moron too :). None of my workmates have wifi enabled PPCs (yet) but one of them is getting one very shortly so I'll be able to try it. In theory though, the wifi association process should not be device/OS dependant. So whether there is an adhoc network with a PC and a PPC. Or a PC and two PPCs. Or two PPCs should make little difference. From a usability perspective there should be a decent difference. But at the wifi layer it should be the same.

A friend of mine with an IPAQ and I (with my Jornada at the time, this was about two years ago now) tried this with our machines and two 802.11b CF cards. We got them to associate, made sure the SSIDs and Ad-Hoc were correct but we could never get the machines to transfer data. Haven't tried it with the IPAQ and Axim. Later today when we get a break maybe we'll try it again.
Well, does anyone know where to set the SSID broadcasted during an AdHoc session in WM2003? When I AdHoc with the desktop, the PPC name is used and I can assign the SSID on the desktop. With the WM2003 to WM2003 setup, I do not see anything in device discovery and I can't find anywhere to set an SSID so I assumed it would use PPC name.
They simply aren't even showing up to each other... maybe one (the X3i) was stuck on a channel. When my son visits today, hopefully he will bring his X3i and I will check out some more.
My friend in one of my classes was thinking about getting an x3i so i was planning on doing this with my x5 and his x3i when he gets it....let me know how it goes.
Not like we would be sending each other text messages and other stuff during class.... off course not :approve: hehe

That is the type of stuff I was wanting to play with and MS Portrait for PPC. Then text messaging (and video + audio if you wanted) could be used between PPCs.
In the meantime, if you have access to an 802.11b AP in class, you can easily use MSN.
When and if we figure it out, I will post. However, I am not too confident it is going to work between the two PPCs. We will see.
Me and a friend were able to do this successfully already a few times. You need to have the IP's set in the same range, and the same SSID...like you said, also though,I think you need to have the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0 on both devices(Not positive, but I think..read somewhere). Finally make sure that neither of you have wep enabled. IF WEP is enabled on either device it will stop if from working. Also, inorder to transfer data you will probably need a program to do so. We used Microsoft Portrait.....its good for sending data, and chatting.
One of the problems is how to set an SSID in WM2003. Hward2k is probably correct that I missed something. It was late, I was tired, you all know the story...
Acutally I could be wrong. Maybe with them making it "easier" in WM2003 there is no option to put it in?? I don't use WM2003 (and I'm not seeing many reasons to upgrade :) ) so maybe it requires some sort of workaround?

As written before, when adhoc with a desktop, the ID of the PPC is automatically the PPC's name.
However, when I tried it PPC to PPC, nothing was showing up for site survey. What I am going to do is:
- Check with a laptop and see if the PPCs are broadcasting. If so, I am going to try to use one of the IDs as a profile on the PPCs
- Make sure WEP is off
- Double check subnet
- Check for channel hang
Having a different subnet mask will stop pc's from communicating so I would think it could have something to do with that. I only say this because you did not mention what the subnet mask was in your post.
