Setting up Wireless Connection Between Laptop and Axim

Hi

Having just purchased the Dell Axin X5 I have been reading through various info on these forums but i'm new to all this Wi-Fi and Bluetooth stuff so can someone help me please.

Is there an easy (preferably Wireless and cheap) way of accessing the internet on my Axim through the 56k Dial up Modem connection on my laptop? and if so what are the implications on speed, distance that i have to be from the laptop (this may be a stupid question, if so pretend i never said it :D )

This is the laptop i have here which includes wireless LAN, could i just use this with a CF Wi-Fi card in the Axim?

Apologies for sounding kinda vague but the whole thing is slightly new to me at the moment.

Thanks

Big A

It can be done. If you have WiFi already on the laptop, you just need to set up internet connection sharing (ICS) on it, get a WiFi CF card for the X5 and set them up in ad-hoc mode. I personally have never set up ICS and while I can tell by the number of posts about it, it can be tricky to get working, people have done it successfully with the Axim. The range on WiFi is theorectically up to 500 feet but realistically, you're probably looking at a couple of hundred feet. Check the links in some signature for some more details on setting up WiFi with a PPC.

Ok thanks

Does the laptop have everything i require though? The guide on this forum says a Wi-Fi router and Access Point is needed, what are these?

Is it simply a case of buying a CF Wi-Fi?

thanks

If all your wanting is to connect the Axim to your laptop then no you do not need a router or an access point ... All you need is the wireless compact flash card for your Axim ..

Now that being said .. If you have broadband access (cable modem or external DSL) then you can get a wireless router also and that would enable your axim to connect not only to your computer but also to the internet even if your computer was turned off ..

Planet-Ed is right. If you look under the Alternate setups section of the How-to, there is a section about doing ad-hoc which is what I mentioned above. The WiFi router or access point are useful with broadband but provide no particular advantage for you since you mentioned you are using a 56K modem.
