has anyone gotten 128 bit WEP to work with the Dell Axim x3i yet? i spent 5 hours on the phone with Dell (India) wasting time with 2 guys who couldn't spell WEP let alone troubleshoot, only to be told at the end that the Axim doesn't support 128 bit WEP.
i can't believe this to be true, but reading the Dell forums, that seems to be the case.
I have been using my X3i with 128 bit WEP. It does work, although I have had a number of the common issues.
(My router is a D-Link 614+, and I have up to four wifi connected computers on this at any one time--not including my PPC.)
Inconsistent connections. Common problems for me include: Wrong IP addresses at times. Perpetual scanning and inability to connect to a recognized network.
I still can't figure out why my wifi only works some of the time, but when it works it does work well. I'm not sure why, but my AOL IM application seems to be the best program I have to grab onto a questionable connection. (In contrast to MSN Messenger, PIE, or my inbox.)
Not sure why these issues occur, but they do. I'm not much of a techie, so I'll keep stumbling around and hope to get it working consistently.
I use 128 bit encryption creating the keys manually. I too have issues sometimes changing keys, and 100% of the time it is because I have mistyped one of the key characters.
I wish I could give you more direction than that.

I also have an Axim X3i and use 128 WEP. Worked from the second I entered the key on my Axim without any hassle. I was very impressed about the smooth way it worked out of the box.
I am also having trouble with my x3i. Have a ipaq4100, no problems. My x3i is being difficult. Tried to let it find it's one IP. What do i put in for the authenicvation key? My encription code?
I too have it working fine - straight from the box. The only problem is that occasionally (no usually) have to rescan after I have used the connection hotkey - but this always connects so nnot much of a problem. Using 128bit encryption btw.
I got it working right with the previous x3i (has to get it changed because of significant humming/buzzing from the screen) - with 128bit WEP and SSID not being broadcasted.
But the new x3i that was sent to me refuses to connect if the SSID is not being broadcasted.
I am having doubts about the consistent quality of the WiFi chip that's in there. Some do connect and some don't - strange ! Very strange !
Unless I am missing somthing - any suggestions will be welcome.
I must say, I'm quite surprised you seem to be having such problems with your X3i and wifi. I have a Belkin F5D7630 Wireless Router and ADSL modem running 128 Bit WEP and SSID Broadcast disabled. I am having no problems. However, I got my Axim connected to my network BEFORE i disabled SSID broadcast. It connects fine, but when I look at the status pane on the Axim, it shows my neighbour's wireless network and its name, and it shows my network, but with just a blank space where the SSID should be. Maybe you should make sure that the Axim connects to the network fine first, then disable SSID broadcast. One other thing. If you're setting up your encryption suing hex keys, input these into your axim, not a passphrase. That is to say that you will have to input 26 characters as your WEP key.
