Symbol Card and detecting hotspots

I've seen a couple of programs mentioned (PocketWinc, etc) that can be used to find and manage hotspots, but I have PPC 2002 and a symbol wireless card. I can't seem to find any programs that will work with that combination. Anyone out there using ppc2002 and symbol/socket wifi card and able to walk/drive around and find available wifi networks? Will the software that came with the card work for that purpose?

I'll be interested to see the replies to your post. I just tried Pocket WiNc also and it says it did not detect a wireless adapter and closes. The Symbol card works great, I can browse the web without problem and the monitor shows a strong signal even though PocketWiNc gives up.

I have : X5 Advance A00, ppc2002, symbol card and pocketwinc and it detects, and connects to so many networks, I could hardly believe it. I did download an update from symbol...I'll have to check to see which it was (I do remember it was for 2002).

I subsequently did a search on "sniffer" and found the solution--remove the Symbol drivers (on Axim: Start \ Settings \ System \ Remove Programs) and install the Socket drivers instead. They are at...

Man, PocketWiNc it a hoot! Drove around from client to client today and, en route, the thing was going off like a fire alarm. Sites all over the place and only about half of them with WEP enabled! Connected once while stopped at a light but got "Page not found" on the browser, probably due to poor signal strength/ quality at that distance from the AP. Haven't had a chance to even read the manual so I know what I'm doing. Hahaha.

BTW (and off topic here), I highly recommend ftxPBrowser for speed and tabs, just like MyIE2, which I also love. PIE takes forever to reload pages when you go back and forth between pages. ftxPBrowser is instantaneous.

Cheer, Larry

Am I understanding this right. I uninstalled the symbol drivers and installed the socket one like you said. Now, did I need a sniffer program or will this work on its own. It looks like it does. Unfortunately, I can't test it right now. I live in redneckville and no houses are close enough to to reach a network if they did have one.

No need for a sniffer program; you can just use the utility that came with the driver. Click on the icon at the bottom right and select "Find WLANS." It lists any detected wireless APs and then you press the Connect button.

However, I find PocketWiNc much more informative and helpful, since it contains additional info (SSID, Internet Accessible or not, signal strength, etc). I just downloaded and installed the free sniffer from boingo.com and it works great, too! For PPC2002, see...

Cheers... Larry

I too have now installed the socket drivers as you mentioned, but although I have it set to my work system, and it's receving an excellent signal, any website I try to connect to (even after a refresh) says "page not found".

I was reaching my network ok when I had used the Signal drivers. What am I doing wrong?

There is no problem that can't be solved with a suitable amount of explosives!

basicaly did you have the WEP configured before when you were using the symbol drivers? i'm not sure but i would think if you had it configured, it would lose the info for it when you switched the drivers. if you didn't have WEP configured then its not an issue, but then i ask why are you not useing WEP?
