Mad Activesync "Guest" problem with WM2003

I'm having a very bad time trying to get active sync to work on my X5 advanced with WM 2003 (Socket drivers, symbol card). I have tried my best to follow the FAQ, but when I connect to activesync it logs me in as a guest, and I am unable to sync my data.

The FAQ had two suggestions: something about using "pockethosts" to delete a registery entry and the uninstalling the program. I don't know what pockethosts is. Is this a program that is installed on my PPC or my desktop? How do I find it?

Second, the FAQ suggests that my firewall might be blocking access. The only firewall I have is on my wireless router (D-Link). That would not be blocking access within the network, would it? If so, what should I do?

Internet works fine. Cradle syncing works fine. I can connect to activesync as a "guest," so I think wifi is working fine.

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated. If this has been addressed somewhere else on the site, I apologize for starting a new thread.

What version of ActiveSync are you using? The latest is 3.7.1 which is supposed to resolve some of the Guest issues.

Also what is the device name of your Axim? If it's Pocket_PC then you need to change it to something else. You can find the device name by tapping Start->Settings. Go to the System tab and tap About. On the About dialog, tap the Device ID tab. Here you can check the device name and change it if you need to.

I'm using Activesync 3.7.1. I changed my PPC name to use only letters, and re-established a connection with the cable. I working through the fixes listed on his site, but I don't think it is a problem with activesync. I think there is a network issue on my desktop. Using Resco Explorer, I am also unable to connect to any of the shared devices on my desktop (running Win 98). However, all of the shared devices on another computer connected to the network wirelessly (running windows me) show up fine on the Axim. There must be something in my network connection on my Win 98 pc that is partially blocking access. I have no idea what it might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well the final suggestion solved my activesync problem. I had to reinstall Internet Explorer 6 on my desktop, and the guest problem went away. It now recognizes my computer and syncs.

However, I still cannot map to my desktop drives. When I try to map, it finds both of the computers on my network, but will only let me map to one of them. It gives me the following error when I hit the + sign for my desktop: "Cannot connect shared path. The network path was not found." When I try to map to the computer (after the "x" goes away) it says: "Cannot map network path. Network resource cannot be found or you do not have permission to access the network. Contact the network administrator."

I can map to the drives on the other computer, and the other computer can map to the drives on my main computer without any problems. Any suggestions.

Also, is there a way with activesync on my handheld to only sync certain things at certain times (like mail, but not avantgo), or is the only option to sync everything?

Thanks again for all of your help. This is a great site, and my new Axim is going to be a lot of fun.

I spoke too soon. Gives me a guest connection again. Searched the web and this appears to be a fairly common problem, with no consistent solution. If anyone knows of a solution I have not tried, let me know.
