Question This may be a silly question

What is a wireless access point and what is it for? I use a peer to peer setting with my four pcs and it all works fine but I wouldn't mind extending the range of the signal so it works outside in the yard.

I would enjoy my pda to surf the web while I was outside. I thought that was the point of the access point but not sure if it really is. So any who, any help would be great.

Thanks!

A wireless access point is used to connect your wireless devices to a wired network. In this way, a wired-only computer can still communicate with a wireless product. Wireless Access Points generally double as routers with NAT support (enabling you to have network access on multiple devices while only using the one IP address your ISP gives you with a basic account.)

The wireless access point will increase the range that you can use your devices at... and Linksys even has a wireless booster that works in connection with their access point. I use it and I have between 90-100% strength anywhere in my house (but I haven't tried it outdoors.)

I have bought a wireless access point but theres no way of linking it up to my pc. I need a rj-45 cable or a router, is there any way of getting it to work via the wireless link. I can see it in the wireless box of windows but can not access it.

Well, it's really for connecting your wireless network to a regular one (like if you have a broadband ISP.) I'm not sure it would work right...

Thanks for the info! :) Is there any way of exsteneding the range of the signal ?

When my pc goes in stand by mode of hibernite mode, I can not access the pc via wireless link. Even when a screen saver is active I still can't. Is there any way of getting it to work while these options are on?

I really appreciate it.

They have what is called a wireless repeater. I've never used one, but you can read more about it here:

They're probably too expensive to be worth it though...
