Wireless CF Card Dimensions

I am considering purchasing an Axim soon, but I'm trying to find out if I can fit both the unit and a wireless CF card in my current Palm VIIx case (The Palm VIIx is 5.25" tall). I'm wondering if I can close the top of the case with both the Axim and card inserted into the CF slot. So what I really need to know is how far above the top of the case the various cards stick out.

If some people could give me measurements of their cards, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

Ernest

I have the Linksys WCF12 and it seems to stick about 7/8" (2.1cm) out of the top of the Axim. The entire unit, with the WCF attached is a shade under 5 7/8" (14.8cm)

Wow, the Dell card sounds like a pretty small one....sounds good in that respect. Have you had any problems with the card? I was thinking of getting the Netgear MA701NA card since it's $60 with a $20 mail-in rebate. Plus I know someone who has the card and it works great for them. I'm staying away from the Linksys WCF12 after all the problems I've heard about it.

Where did you get your SimpleTech 256MB SD? I'm thinking about getting a Lexar 256MB card for about $77 when I get my Axim, but if I can find something cheaper than that (besides a Sandisk) that would be geat.

What do you use your Bluetooth for?

I can't measure the CF card right now, but the Socket Communications Low Power WLAN CF card has the smallest antenna and the best battery life I have found. (compared to the LinkSys WCF12 and the Ambicom CF). A close second on the battery life is the Ambicom. I use the Socket card in my Ax at all times and have the Ambicom as a backup (just in case ;) ).

Let me know if you're able to measure the Socket card! Isn't that the really expensive one though? I think I have seen it for no less than $140 or so. How much better is the battery life?

No problems with the Dell Wi-Fi card. I bought the SimpleTech cards from Dell when I ordered my Axim in January. The Bluetooth card is arriving tomorrow ....

I paid $119 for the Socket and $29 for the Ambicom.

I will measure the top of the card tonight and post what it is.

BTW: I think the Socket card is 100% worth it for the power savings and for the size...

Okay... using an old wooden ruler:

The Socket card is:

Total of 2 1/8 " long
The antenna appears to be 1/2 ", however, it looks like the start of the antenna is closer to the Ax than the Ambicom (but probably just looks and not in reality)

The Ambicom card is:

Total of 2 5/16 " long
The antenna appears to be 3/4". The dfference between the Ambicom and the Socket is noticable. The Ambicom antenna height looks close to the LinkSys

Some things to point out:

My LinkSys card worked great until I started having reconnect problems. I also noticed much battery usage. I returned the card.
The Ambicom never gives me any reconnect problems. The power usage is less than the LinkSys but greater than the Socket.
The Socket never gives me any problems at reconnect. The battery usage is really low. Indeed, I never take it out of the Ax.

The range on all three appeared to be the same to me.

Hope this helps. If you want, I can snap a pic of both cards in the Ax and email them to you.

If I had to pick one card, I would pick the Socket.

BTW: The dimensions of the card should be on their website at http://www.socketcom.com

I just went through this (and finally decided on the Ambicom) last week

The dimensions posted by each manufacturer are:
2.44 x 1.69 x .13 62x43x3.2 ambicom 1100c
2.18 x 1.78 x .13 55x43x3.3 socket
2.37 x 1.70 x .13 60x43x3.3 linksys cf12

Those first dimensions are in inches, the second are mm!

No problems with the Ambicom (have been using it for two nights so far)... battery usage on the Axim seems to be pretty good!
