I used to use Windows Media Encoder on my pc to stream the mp3s over to my x3i but you get no control over playback(ie. fast forward, rewind, song skip).

I now use Resco File Explorer to map My Network under my devices so when i go into one of one media players on my x3i that i can just select which one i want with the mp3 as if it was on my SD card.

I'm not sure if its just the way they are set up but I wasn't able to directly stream media files from my PC. Basically, File Explorer wouldn't open the file directly.

I did manage it though by creating a shortcut on my Axim to the media file on my PC. I did it like this:-

Go into File Explorer and access the shared folder on your PC where the media file resides

Tap and hold the file > select "Copy"

Access any local folder you like on your Axim

Tap and hold > Select "Paste shortcut"

Tap the shortcut to open it and Media player should launch and stream the file.

In this way you could build a whole folder of shortcuts which point to the files on your PC.

HTH

That isn't actually streaming the file.

It's somewhat of a technicality but in summary, streaming the file is where you "broadcast" the file and users connect to it at a specific bitrate. This bitrate will be tuned for the audience and connection medium.

You would stream music over the Internet for example.

What you are doing is effectively just dumping the file down over the network, which is different.

For home use it's often ok, but if you want to connect over the Internet (for example) then you want to "properly" stream it using WME or similar.

Another great, free utility for your purpose (presuming you just want to stream over say a wireless home network) is to install the program NetUSE (just do a search and you should be able to find it). From there you should map your network drive with all the media on your axim and use Windows Media Player to play the files (just double click them in File Explorer on the Axim). Beforewarned, you are going to have to open ports on the firewall on your PC for this to work. I believe opening ports 137-139 for UDP and TCP is all you need. Streaming MP3's over an 802.11b network works fine for me, even with my roommate browsing in the other room, but I'd avoid running any bandwith heavy apps while you're doing it.

Adios,
~Nick

As you say Howard...I agree its not actually "streaming" in the truest sense of the word...

...but its not simply dumping either as by creating a shortcut to the media file on your PC its played back as it comes in which gives the impression of streaming rather than downloading a whole file to your axim. The file doesn't remain on your axim afterwards for if you try and play it back after disconnecting from your PC you get an error reporting the file cannot be found.

In any case... for what sly was looking for (viewing media from your PC on your Axim - unless I'm barking up completely the wrong tree) it works!
