Hi all. wondering if some of you experienced wlan chaps can help me out.
I have my work sony vaio laptop (pcg-r600mhpd) which is factory shipped with winxp.
However, it currently has win2k on it. The OS has some "orinoco client manager" app, but it doesn't work because the driver for the network card (listed as Lan-Express IEEE 802.11b wireless lan card) is different to the one used in XP (Orinoco wireless mini pci lan card). If I load up the app, it just says the card is physically not installed (which of course it is, being built-in).
I've tried installing the xp drivers, but it doesn't like that. It only accepts the Lan-Express ones which are the microsoft ones which come with win2k.
Now I have my X5 with a nice new socket wifi card, I want to get them talking, mainly so I can do an active sync remotely.
I've managed to find an HP app
here which seems to connect to the driver and card on my laptop, but there's no option for selecting the wireless network, like you get with XP. I can set up the WEP keys, channel number, whether to act as an AP or an ad-hoc but that's about it.
I've found an updated version of the orinoco client manager, installed it, but it still says that no card is physically present. I'm now guessing that's because the hardware is using the LAN-Express drivers and not the Orinoco ones. At least if I had orinono drivers that worked with win2k, I should be alright.
So far, I've managed to get the HP app talking as previously mentioned, but it seems to select a default network which has a week signal and goes down to a 2 or 1 mbps link. I can't seem to be able to find anywhere how to chose the network SSID I've created with the X5.
Is there a generic kind of "setup" app which gives that functionality in win2k? Obviously, winxp gives that out of the box and there is the orinoco client manager app on top to help you set up profiles and the like. But there doesn't seem to be anything out of the box with win2k to provide that functionality.
Sorry for the long post, but I hope you get the gist of my problem! Any advice / ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance :)
Xavier
