How I got ActiveSynce to work with ZoneAlarm over WiFi

I'm working with ZoneAlarm Pro Version 4.5.538.001.

I just got ZoneAlarm (ZA) and figured out pretty quickly by searching these forums that ActiveSync (AS) doesn't work with ZA running.

I've managed to get it working, however it's still a little buggy. I'm hoping some of you out there that would like to see these two programs work together might be able to help me figure out the last small problem.

The main problem with getting AS to work with ZA is that you have to allow AS to access the internet from within ZA. This isn't as easy as it sounds because AS uses ports ZA blocks by default. Because of this, you never see the requests for connection approval to be able to allow them.

The solution:

1. Make sure your internet connection on your Axim is in working order. You should assign a static IP on your network to your Axim. My Axim is 192.168.1.105 so I'll be using that as an example from now on.

2. Open ZA and click on "Firewall" in the left bar.

3. Click the "Expert" tab on the top right bar.

4. Click the "Add" button on the bottom right.

5. Set it up as follows:
Rank: 1
State: Enabled
Name: Axim
Action: Allow
Track: Alert and Log

Under Source:
Click the "Modify" button and pick "Add Location" then "IP Address". Make the description "Axim" and put your Axim's IP address in the IP Address field. I put in 192.168.1.105. Click ok.

Under Destination:
Click the "Modify" button and pick "Add Location" then "My Computer".

Protocol and Time should both read "any", which is fine.

Click ok to save the rule.

6. Click "Apply" at the bottom right.

7. Now tell your Axim to sync.

8. You should now get a couple of Alerts from ZA now. Check remember this program box and then ok.

Your Axim is now allowed to connect to AS anytime it wants.

Now, the small problem I'm having with this is once my Axim syncs it disconnects. I have the options in AS on my axim set to keep the connection open so it must be ZA related.

If you try this out and you have the same issues as I, or even different results please post them here.

I agree with HighTymes, I had no problems with ZA working with AS.

I ditto HighTymes, and I can switch to USB or Serial connection without changing any settings
(should I get any unresolved items).

I also have Assigned IPs, and am running the same version of ZAP as you are.

FYI: You cannot resolve items via WiFi.

I don't understand what you mean by you can switch to USB or serial. They are the same thing. This thread is about using WiFi.

.
.

I have a USB Cradle and a Serial Cradle and I can pop my Axim in either one without the WiFi Card and it connects Automatically without any conflict with Zone Alarm Pro (which is what the thread is really all about).

In other words, I can.........

Put my USB in,
Take my USB out,
Put my Serial in,
Take my Serial out,
Put my WiFi in,
Take my WiFi out,
And I can switch 'em all about.
And it does the ASync Pokey
Without twisting ZA Pro around in knots,
That's what it's all about.

I synch via wifi running ZA, and was prompted to allow it to access the network, etc. and it works without a hitch. It could be possible that you had unknowingly denied it access in the beginning, and had the box checked so that it wouldn't prompt you again.

Being able to sync via serial or USB is not "what this thread is really about". Any monkey can sync that way.

This thread is only about making a connection via WiFi with ZA Pro Version 4.5.538.001. If you want to talk about something else please start a new thread.

I thought about that, so I uninstalled ZA and reinstalled it. Then, when I tried to sync nothing happened. ZA couldn't see the request until I followed the steps in my first post. Then it could connect but would drop the connection after X time itle. What version of ZA are you using? I'm using Pro (not plus) version 4

Well, seems you're the one who brought up USB.

Plus, anyone searching for problems with ZA (Pro, or not) isn't necessarilly looking only for WiFi information.

Thanks, my Personal Tally just went up another 6 Points!

I don't know what your talking about. I created this thread and I don't care about connecting with USB. The only reason I typed "USB" was because your reply didn't make sense to me and I figured you were using USB, which was true. This thread isn't for anything but to help me troubleshoot an issue I'm having between WiFi and ZA. If you continue to troll here I will be forced to report you.

.

It's a Community Forum, and I added information I thought pertinent.

Sorry if you disagree.

ps; You didn't reply to me about USB.

That one was worth another 17Points!!!:hide:

MrKlaatu, you are posting off topic for this thread. If you have nothing to add to the topic "How I got ActiveSynce to work with ZoneAlarm over WiFi" but you still want to talk about your USB connection working go do it in another thread.

Yeah, I have a tendancy to do that occasionally. But I don't think this time I really have!

But first, let me say this, and then you can have your Thread back.....all to your own little lonesome:

The only reason I ever mentioned USB in the first place was because you, specifically brought it up....before....my first post, here.

From then on, you became Mr. Defensive (nee, Touchysensitive) about it.

All's I can say is , "Lighten up dude and tell your laundry person to leave out at least half the starch, next time."

.....................................Carry on!

(Check my personal score now!!!):approve:
