My "solution" to the wireless synch "guest" problem

Hey Everyone,
Because I'm a Axim/Pocket PC newbie, I followed Ike's FAQ to the letter, so before taking my advice, use all of his settings first. Unfortunately, Ike's sage advice still didn't solve my "guest" when synching wireless problem. I think I've solved it for good (I hope) w/o any other apps. It's was a just an annoying Microsoft box I didn't realize that I needed to check.

Anyway, here's what I sent to Ike in an earlier email and he suggested I post it.

I've been reading your FAQ in an attempt to solve my
wireless synch problem that I and apparently many
others have experienced. Thanks for you focus on
this. (The problem when it always says "guest" when
attempting to synch wirelessly.) I think I may
have fixed the problem, though you can never be sure,
and it was a simple solution.

I did not have the first box checked ("allow other
network users...") under my Internet Connection section
for my in wireless connection settin of "Network
Connections"

Network Connections>Wireless Network
Connectio>Properties>Advanced>Interconnection
Sharing>Check first box "allow network sharing..."> OK
> go to town...it should work.

It now all made sense that it worked: the OS was letting me connect as "Guest", but not letting me share the files associated with the ID on my Axim because I had not checked the box enabling file sharing...or at least that's how I rationalized why the Microsoft product manager justified skipping usability testing for this feature.

The only other thing I did was change the name of the Axim from "Pocket_PC" to something else, but I doubt this had much to do with it. Hopefully, it will continue to work. I haven't seen
this mentioned in any FAQ (but I haven't read them
all) so I thought I would share it.

Good Luck! I hope this helps some body.

Actually it's quite possible that it had a LOT to do with it.

It's that underscore character in the name of the Device. Many things in the MicroSoft Universe DO NOT LIKE THAT CHARACTER IN A NAME.

So, of course, it stands to reason that MicroSoft would cause it to be used in the default name for one of it's products.

Yep - you don't need file sharing open to sync wirelessly. Probably the "_" had more of an effect.

There is also some black magic in there too.

No doubt, but I'm sure it still didn't work even after I removed the "_".
